If Ford still made them I'd have one instead of my F250......a 6.7 Excursion would be nice.

Here is one I built for a guy. 2012 with a 6.7 and interior

Finally got the boat out of storage...got to try out my new tow rig. I upgraded over the winter from a Tahoe as we needed the extra room for all the kids "stuff". Initial towing impression was really positive for the Expedition. Can't wait to get the boat in the lake!!!

I've had my 2013 Expedition EL since Nov, put almost 10K miles on it so far. Having three kids, I really like the extra cargo space behind the 3rd row seat...night and day difference over my 2009 Tahoe LTZ. It seems as though the ride is softer and quieter. I have been pleased with the fit and finish so far.

What I was really surprised with was the pricing when I bought...Suburbans and Yukon XL's were several thousand dollars more on the used market. I was able to get mine fully loaded for roughly $40K with only 25K miles on it. This made it a great value in my mind...just don't see as many of these on the road as the GM products.

All in all, I like it. No issues so far...hopefully i don'

Yes the truck is a 5.3L. It's does an Okay job. I have a Denali that I can tow with that has the 6.2l and that is a big difference. I don't tow it that much since the boat sits on a hoist the majority of the time. But on long hauls I use the Denali but the 5.3l will get the job done. I don't like to pull a boat over 70 so I usually set the cruise at 65.

Dave I had a set, they were great tires in everything but snow.. Terrible in snow. I literally almost got my dmax stuck in a 6" patch of snow when I pulled it into it to take a picture.

I had the same tread style as Aric. The tread that looks kinda like a bfg at is supposed to be a great tire.

I've had great luck with the Firestone Destination AT's for snow, tow, and OR. They are not aggressive mudders, but are good for snow ski season and make for good pavement manners.

Been towing this guy now more than a few times to the lake about an hour away. Mostly flats w/ some windy areas @ 55 - 65 MPH on the HWY. The JK Wrangler Unlimited is on 37's, 5:38's, Flashpaq Tow Tune, Mishimoto Trans Cooler and rear 2620 OME Coils. Braking is obviously reduced but gets help from the trailer's surge brakes. No complaints w/ handling and Jeep needs a little more torque on the take off but otherwise it does a really good job towing, launching and receiving. MC 2006 X2.

I actually just had the same debate and even test drove a 3/4 diesel. The 1/2 ton seemed to do fine. The 6 speed transmission is much nicer than the 4 speed that was in my '08 gmc. The book says this truck is rated for a 10800 lb trailer, which should be more than enough for my boat.

For the minimal price difference we just went with the 3/4 ton and got the diesel. Bigger brakes, exhaust brake and diesel were the huge pluses for towing.. Stops as well as it goes. Also has the engine braking in tow/haul mode

Since I have to use this as a daily driver into the city, it ended up working out better than the 3/4 ton. I actually had a 3/4 ton spec'ed out and ready to order but couldn't pull the trigger based on how I'd use it. I rarely tow more than 4500 or 5000lbs so the diesel would be a little over kill for me. It was a tough decision for me since I work for Allison and was really wanting to have their transmission in my truck.

I waffled back on forth on the 1500 versus 2500 and ended up with the diesel last Tuesday. They rebated them a good amount and ended up with a top of the line 2500 for not much more than a comparable 1500. Plus I love the sound a diesel makes... Once I hook it up this weekend I'll post photos

To the guys towing with Grand Cherokees (moosehead and BrianT)- how do they do? Any trailer sway or major squat from the weight? I would imagine moosehead's is a 5.7L, and I'm curious to know how it does going over the passes, as that's one of my larger concerns here in CO as well.

Any long distance I'd likely tow with my 3/4 ton (Pics to follow at some point when I snap one!) or our Yukon, but thinking about picking up a Grand Cherokee and wondering how it might do on towing duty if pressed into service.

BrianT
06-12-2015, 04:38 PM
Well regarding mine, it pulls my X2 with ease. I put it in trailer mode and it stiffens up the back end with very little sag. Mine has the 6.4L, with 465 ft/lbs of torque it isn't an issue with that weight. I get no sway at all. I use to have a Yukon Denali and I found it squatted more than the GC.

06-12-2015, 11:47 PM
I realize after you posted that, that you have the downright dreamy SRT version, and that there should be no complaints about power :D That's also got the adjustable suspension as well, so that makes sense regarding sag. What year Denali did you have, and how does it compare to that? That's also on the possible list as well (2007-2014 model), so direct comparisons would be great!

10M, many are surprised to see the JGC towing a 5-6k rig over Berthoud and whatnot, it does tremendously well. 5.7L tuned with Diablo 91 octane, Borla pipes, intake. IIRC the 2011 has a 8k lb tow rating or so. No squat (load leveling air suspension), no real sweat from the engine or brakes.

We have used it to tow from Denver up to Flaming Gorge some 6 hours each way, no issues. Only time it was near maxed out was hauling up from Vernal Utah up the hill several thousand feet on a hot day and the trans temp got up there, but we chugged by many rigs on the side of the road. Your 3/4 ton would have been preferred then, or certainly for any extreme conditions.

My Denali was a 2011 and it was a great tow rig. Got decent mileage and most of the time if I was pulling a hill I would have to back off the throttle to slow down. The 6.2L was a beast. I had no complaints with it. I haven't pulled the boat enough to gauge the mileage yet with the GC but on a short haul I was averaging 11mpg with the boat vs 23mpg highway without the boat. I can't remember exactly the mileage last year with the Denali but I'm sure it was around the same while towing.

To keep along with the same topic.....I have an '11 Sierra 1500 with the 5.3. I pull a lot of hills here in WA state over mountain passes etc, and that the 5.3 struggles. Moosehead, did you find that the Diablo 91 tune was worth it? Notice a difference substantially? I considered buying a 3/4, but that is just more $$$. If I could increase the performance of my 1/2 ton 1500, I would rather just keep it. Anybody else have any experience with a Sierra/Silverado with the 5.3 and with upgrades?

As others suggested, gighly recommend the custom Hemifever Tune for Diablo if you are going with Mopar. Hemifever sells his customed tunes along with the Diablo tuner as a package, and is superb at following up with tweaked tunes to get your specific vehicle dialed in. Biggest difference was throttle response, no more lag from the hated drive by wire throttle control.

For pulling the boat, I wish I had a 3/4 ton. Half ton pulls the boat like crap, but I love it for normal use. I only pull the boat about 7 hours a year though so it's not that big of deal. The fact it's a company truck and the fuel is free makes it not that big of deal either.

That is great to know- what kind of mileage roughly were you getting out of the Denali in the real world, not towing? We have a Yukon with the 5.3 and it does a decent job around town, but I dread the day I'm going to need to tow it over one of our Mtn. Passes. Any major problems with the Denali that pushed you to the GC, or was it just time for an upgrade?

I can say that I would certainly be surprised if I saw you on one of the passes! I didn't realize you had the air suspension as well, but that sounds like it helps the squat. Of all the mods, I assume the tune was the best bang for the buck? And do you load the boat with gear to make up for potential lack of room in the tow rig (I don't know if you're hauling kids, a dog and coolers, etc, or not) to add more weight back there?

My 3/4 ton is a '12 Power Wagon, so I share the 5.7L but sit on 4.56 gears. That said, it's a lot more weight to move around then your GC so that 5.7L is working a lot harder. And of course, they had to tempt me with the new model that now has the 6.4L and better highway gears. :D

Will have to check out his website!

The Denali got on average around 23mpg, combined city/highway not towing. No problems whatsoever with the GM but it was just time to upgrade to something different.

No I went with the Hemi Sport. The Ecodiesel brought me in, but some of the reviews scared me off. I also have a very short tow and commute. I read that wasn't great for any diesel. Thanks!

Why 2wd with if your pulling a boat? Not sure that is a wise decision. And yes they are expensive, the 6.2L Z71 LTZ is a 50K truck....

I've never once in my life needed 4wd at a ramp honestly, and I've never owned a 4wd. Heck, the sticker on mine was 49.. My ford couldn't handle the boat with my lift and tires... The motor was throwing codes and running terrible at 55k miles.

I'm not brand loyal, and my money goes to who makes the best trucks. you call them "government motors" because they took a bail out..newsflash, so did ford! If my truck throws codes at 55k miles, I'm obviously not going to turn around and give them my money again. Not to mention the piss poor dealer service I've gotten at every dealer I've gone to. I have no problem with American made trucks, I just don't hold with Ford bashing. They have been the best sellers for 38 years, that has to say something. Newsflash back at ya, Ford never took any bailout that I'm aware of, Chrysler and GM did, twice, that also says something. You like Chevy, no problem, I was just responding to the Ford dissing. I will agree on the bad dealer service, that's why I do my own maintenance and repairs on all my vehicles.

That's kinda funny. That's the same reasons I went with ford. My parents had terrible experience(s) with their suburban with the 5.3 even to the point where it was burning a quart of oil every tank of gas. That was at around 50k miles too. Just goes to show there is no perfect brand or vehicle.

watch the 5.3 oil consumption! Listen for the lifters in the morning and keep a good (Wix) oil filter on it. Even though I use/sell Amsoil I throw a fresh filter on it every couple of months, the oil stays a year. Even with the 3.42 with the 6 speed it should pull as good as my 3.73 with the 4 speed

Takes an otherwise 4wd truck, cuts out the front drivetrain, then is labeled as "Texas Edition" with some steer horns on there for the good 'ol boys that snag one up to hunt some coyotes!

Texas edition is nothing besides an ego-feeder for those in the great nation of Texas to make them think they have something others can't get. In reality, they just have a 2wd drive with a sticker of a cow on it. :D
