  • Attaching Depth Finder Sensor to the Hull

    What kind of adhesive should I use to attach the depth finder sensor to the hull? I found it coming off the hull this morning.

    Thanks to everyone who helped with the collant question on the LQ9! Now if I can find this collant at a local location!

    I think you're going to want to use 3M 4200 or 5200. I think the 4200 can be removed at a future date if you need to and the 5200 is much harder to take off.

      I simply used marine rated adhesive caulk from a building supply store. Please note, if you get an air bubble between the hull and the sensor, you may misread. Apply a good amount and push down. I would not re-seat it. Leave it be.

        When this happened to me I called Humminbird and they told me to use plain old epoxy glue. They specifically told me to not use silicone. I wouldn't use 4200 or 5200 unless they recommend it. Call them.

          Not sure if things have changed but when I've installed "shoot through the hull" transducers it always been epoxy. I would think that using a caulking material would absorb the radio waves being sent/received and cause poor performance of the transducer.

            And I believe they say do not use fast dry epoxy as well.

              The 2004/2005 MC depth finder installation instructions (Steps 1-3) recommend using epoxy/hardner to attach the transducer to the hull...see attached. mac

                I used Marinetex for my transducer. It works great. It is oil\gas proof.

                  I used marine grade epoxy from Lowes. Two part mix by hand, no air bubles. Worked great.

                    On the instructions for the Tranducers that I have read have called for Epoxy. Slow cure epoxy as it is less prone to trap air bubbles. As mentioned before it is very important to not trap air bubbles otherwise you will get mis-reads.
