  • Ford Fire = New Truck.....Advise

I have always had Gmc or Chevys. But the Ford was a good ride. Now i'm looking again and i'm going back. Previous had Gmc Yukon 4x4 then Gmc Sub 2wd then Tahoe 2wd and the latest which burned a few days ago Ford Exp, 4x4. Now i'm looking again. I'v found a '04 Sub 4x4 with 30k miles with the 5.3, but since now the kids are gone it seems big. Tahoe or Yukon seems to fit, but the sub. is not out. Also a '04 Yukon 2wd, but with the 4.8. My questions are.....who has towed with the 4.8 and does it do it. I have a '93 190 which i don't plan on upgrading for a while and it sits on a tandum trailer. In todays market and since i,m retired can't justify new truck every two years.
Disclaimer:this post is not intended to open a can of worms. I am not resposable of all the dog fights that might occure. I have made up my mind on GM so don't argue here, Thank you.

Just throwing it out there: http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/cto/963084919.html

Obviously, I have the 4.8l in my '04 Tahoe and never had any problems towing my PS190 nor my PS197.

4.8 is under powered, most 4.8 8v tahoe where not equipped with the tow package you need.
I would diff go with the 5.3/6.0, gas mileage is no diff between the 4.8/5.3/6.0. I have tahoe, it's only me and my wife, I wish I had a suburban. When you want to plan a weekend get away with the boat and a few friends the extra room is always nice for storage/luggage/food/etc.

I have to disagree with you about the fuel economy, the 6.0 L LOVES gas! I've had 2 of them, a 2001 Denali 6.0 and my current 2000 Suburban 6.0 and you will not get better than 14-15 mpg on the hwy. (a lot less on my current ride since it has a 4:10 rear) The only reason I purchased my K-2500 'burban is because at the time I was pulling a 30-foot Formula behind it. If I had to do it over again, I would by a 1/2 ton Suburban LTZ (2004-ish) with the 5.3 liter. You can possibly get 20 mpg hwy with that truck (Tahoe or Suburban should be about the same mpg) It won't even sweat towing your boat, so there's my $.02.

BTW, you can find them CHEAP right now because most people don't want large SUV's anymore.
          I was njskier on here.

good luck ... my '02 with only 114,000 young miles is for sale too

              2wd vs. 4x4

Please also issue the 2wd and 4x4 issues. The ramp i usually use is well maintained and average steepness. Thx...

I had a 99 4x4 Silverado with the 4.8 Towed my PS209 just fine. Only thing I didn't like was on hills it was either at 2800-3000 RPM or would downshift and be at 4400 RPM Hated that. My Ford hardly breaks a sweat on hills and I suspect it's because it has a 5.4L

Hey Jim Baws isn't this the way people can be some time....

Get a big V8 in whatever gas engine you are looking at, otherwise you will always be saying should have.....

I'll throw my two cents in as well... We have a 2006 Z71 Tahoe with the 5.3L in it. Previous to that we had a Denali with the 6.0L... the 5.3 pulls just as well as the 6.0, and there is a marginal difference in fuel mileage. I have several buddies that pull with Fords, and after riding/driving them, I am glad that we have the Chev... good luck with your search.

I have an 04 Chevy Sub 4x4 with the 5.3L in it. It does a gret job at towing. We bought it new and have about 55k on it. I have now towed my X2 across the country four times. That is four road trips at 1500 miles each. Included in that is the continental divide and some serious mountain passes. My boat is about 5000 lbs plus a loaded down suburban and no problems at all.

Next vehicle will probably be a Tahoe as the suburban is big!! I even have two young kids but still thinking of downsizing. Would definately get the bigger motor.

                            We have an '01 Tahoe 4WD w/ the 5.3L.

My .02 is that it's possible to drive a 5.3L motor easy and not strain it, or more importantly the transmission, when you're loaded with full vehicle including gas, family, friends, equipment and a boat wit a tank of gas etc ... as opposed to having the smaller motor and wanting or needing to really get into the throttle and gears.

My '01 has 154k and I tow all the time. Of course I'm fairly good about maintaining. The only other recommendation is that if you're buying used, check the tranny fluid. If it smells burned then it's only a matter of time.

                            Good luck ...
