    Fiberglass Fender Removal

Does anyone know if it's possible to remove the fenders off a Mastercraft trailer with boat still on it? The trailer looks good just the fenders are faded. I would like to paint them. I was thinking if I take off the guide poles it might come off. Anybody done this yet?

They were red now they turned orange. I think it needs to be re painted.

Sorry, I had this picture and I thought it was revelant. I seriously think buffing it will bring the color back, other wise take a look at the fenders and see what's holding them on, i.e. screw, bolt, etc.

If you can get the guide poles off yes the fenders will come off (my 84 anyway).

Yes, take the guide bars off and the wheel and tire off and they will come off horizontally with the boat on the trailer, otherwise you'll have to remove the boat to take them off vertically. Been there, done that!

Of course, those fenders aren't painted at the factory, they're gel coated. You have nothing to lose by sanding/buffing extensively and seeing if you can get the oxidation off and color back, because you'll have to do all that surface prep anyway in order to get paint to stick to the polyester gelcoat.

My fenders are faded pretty bad too. I started to buff them out with some oxidation remover and it worked OK, but was really a pain in the butt. The rubber pads were hard to get around and the wax was nearly impossible to keep out of the cracks. So I was able to get rid of the white color on my black fenders (they don't shine like new ones), but the dried wax is still on the rubber pads. Anyone have any good tips on buffing this type of surface? Are there any helpful tools? How do the pros do it? I've been putting some serious elbow grease into my boat ('05 X2) and it just doesn't seem possible to bring back the color like the pros do.

Tape out the rubber pads first and try duct tape vs masking tape to keep from burning thru the tape!

If you are not already doing so, you need to using a professional buffer like the ones used in auto body repair. Anything less just doesn't have the torque required to spin at a high enough rate with the required pressure applied to buff gelcoat, which is really hard compared to paint.

                            Guide Posts

I tried exactly what you are talking about. I never could get the guide posts off. There is a bolt at the bottom of the post that keeps it tight. I removed it and used WD-40 to try and loosen the posts, but could not get them out. I tried and tried and finally went to the lake and had someone drive the boat around while I took the fenders off.
Love my boat, hate my trailer.
