  • Yellow plastic issue how to bring back original color?

My air vents and cup holders are yellowed from the sun. Any luck with products that will bring back the shine of original color?

Also is the magic eraser the best thing for rails from dock rash?

Replace with stainless or brushed aluminum?

I have had some success repainting yellowed plastic parts with a spray paint specifically formulated for plastic. I think Krylon has paint for this purpose.

If I was going to paint I would just buy the stainless. As far as the air vents I don't think they make a stainless replacement for those. I thought I read somewhere Totally Awesome works for restoring color?

I've fabricated a few things for mine over the years that came out good. I've never heard of anything that takes the yellowing out...

Vents are pretty cheap to replace as I did mine. Also saw the comment on totally awesome and tried it on old vents last weekend. Did remove 80% of the yellowing but would probably paint them to bring them back like new

3M marine fiberglass restorer and wax + orbital buffer brought mine back to new in about 3 minutes.

If you dont have an orbital buffer, light sanding and hand buff will be similar. The yellowing appears to only be on the surface and not penetrate the plastic. Or pick up some new ones for ~$30 http://www.waterskis.com/354020-p/bow_vent.htm

I'll just hit them with compound when I do my boat. Sounds like my rotary will take care of that yellow.

Wait I probably shouldn't use a rotary now that I think about it as it will burn through the plastic. I'l use my DA instead.

It may sound crazy, but nail polish remover works great on getting rid of the yellow on plastics, returning the nice white.

That sounds like it might be worth a shot!

TA worked well for a quick wipe but tonight I removed them and buffed with the rotary and 3m Imperial Compound then 303'd. Hopefully I am Done with these for a while.
