  • Tower Knobs Issues

So I just lowered my tower for the first time on my 2007 and had some problems, I went to take out the forward knobs on the rear bases and the knob unscrewed but the studs stayed in the base. In other words the stud stayed in the base and the naked knob came off?
I was able to get the studs out by double nutting them an the slowly came out.

See the pictures below: it shows how the studs were in the knobs, it seems backwards to me?
The thread on the studs are bad, hopefully I can chase the threads on the tower bases, if not I can always heli-coil them.

looks as though the hex set pin was holding the threaded bolt to the base plate
are the base plates mounted backwards, port to starboard?

      Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

I just looked and that was it! they are reversed. I will swap them so the bad thread are in the back and will never be removed.

Got the damages studs back in, they went in kinda hard but they never need to come back out.

I just need to get some red Loctite for the base bolts before I reinstall them.

                Slight (sidewards) thread jack . . .
Does anyone have a suggestion for getting out frozen studs when there isn't enough thread to double-nut them? That's the case with the upper knobs on my 2005 tower.

Have you tried self locking nuts? they are much thinner.

Welcome to the dreaded ZFT3 tower knob issue's. I for one don't know why they did not drill and pin the hand knob portion. If I was lowering the tower on these weekly, I would have done this on my tower. Locktite should help but not a cure all.

Use some lock tite primer before the red and it will be a solid repair

I think it's a good idea to put some anti seize on the threads once a year.

Had a similar issue on our 2002 tower. In my case Stainless into Aluminium started off well, but they bind really easily. We now oil the threads every off season.
