I know this is a bit old - how is the Harbor Freight winch holding up - I'm planning the same thing - with a Solar kit as well.... curious what others have done with them

I'd be surprised if he actually installed one. Trouble with a winch is that they don't usually have a robust brake.

Most boat lift motors literally turn the handle which keeps the factory friction brake setup installed and in place. If you wanted to instead remove the factory hoist set up/cable etc. and feed a cable through it you'll need to have some form of brake.

When I debated this my thought was to have some way to hook a chain then unload the winch so the cradle was being suspended by the chain. But the reality is you'll have people getting confused and causing problems.

I have a surface drive wheel. My bro in law has a Harbor Freight winch on his jet ski lift...works well and holds.
