  • Wake Feedback on 2008 X14

Looking for feedback on 2008 X14 DD wakes for course skiing/free skiing (not competitively) but also would like to surf/wake sometime. Appreciate that the waket is opposite ends but looking to hear if it is too much of a compromise. . Dealership said that it is really not good and any of it and compromised all three. Appreciate anyone’s real world experience with this boat as I thought it would be a good choice for a family and using for all three activities. Tx for any insight!!!

John’s post here pretty spot on to answer your question.

Ski and wakeboard wake are pretty darn good for a boat this size. Surf wake is marginal at best. You have to use a lot of extra ballast which makes the boat ride really low in the water.

      Thank you! Valulable feedback

Thank you again for taking the time for feedback. With a significant investment even in a used MC want to make sure its the right decision and will be a great choice.

My thoughts and I'm not a pro by any means. It isn't really an all-star at anything, but it tries to do everything.

The ski wake is decent. I usually ski around 30-32 and there is a pretty big bump at 15' off. It goes away if you ski faster or shorten the line. The wakeboard wake is again ok for beginner / intermediate riders. If you fill the ballast and have some extra people in the boat it is nice. Again speed is a factor, if you ride faster, say 23-24 it starts to flatten out. Surf is tough, it doesn't have much freeboard in the back (or the bow for that matter!) so you can't really sack it out. The platform is large and cuts in to the wave. If I add some sacks and a shaper we can get kids to drop the rope but not adults.

Now, we are coming from a '93 Prostar 190 so the ski wake was a downgrade, especially at the slower speeds, but we needed more space and weren't ready to give up on the direct drive just yet. It has a bunch more space and is much more comfortable to hang out on with a larger group. The wakeboard wake is much better than the Prostar 190 too.

        Hope that helps!

I have a 214 DD from 2008 and I echo alot of what is being written here.

Slalom - excellent for a boat of this size, it can handle course skiing and is very good in spray. There is a bump especially as you cross the 2nd wake ... 22 off at anything under 34 .... stay on edge.

Wake - really soft nice wakes for learning and intermediates, you can get plenty of air as you develop. Really advanced riders will want more width and height on the wake for sure.

Surf? - flat bottom ... dont buy this boat in hopes of surfing .... I recommend a 2008 X2 if you want to do all 3 ....

          My $0.02. Good luck!
Ski in snow, ski in water, and always have fun!

In addition to my anecdotal review that Kwoody linked, here is a good thread on the X14 ski wake from the days when the X14 was new to the market.

Biased of course by the X14 is one great boat ... my nephew had no problems throwing all kinds of flips with just the stock boat. I think the barefoot wake is great ... somedays prefer the wake to our barefoot boat. Slalom wake is very good ... about the same as my 197, not as good as my '93 190. Surf ... yep it doesn't do that ... can you try sure and i have even let go of the rope for a short run but it is not made for that.

Get it and hang out with a friend who has a surf boat

One more thing as I think about this ... I think the 214 is one of the best boats EVER by any manufacturer if you wanted a bigger boat that slaloms, foots, and cruises with friends all day.

Having a friend with a surf boat and you with a 214, and there is nothing you can't do on the lake.

                    Peace.

I second Brian's comments having also come from a (1988) 190. It's a very solid compromise for a family that slaloms, along with those other water sports. With the ballast full it's fine for wakeboarding but the hull/wake really only provides pop on one side. We surf too but don't let go of the rope (I guess that's not really surfing). I think it's reasonable on gas too. In the future when we move to two boats, I'll probably do a 46/23 and an old 190 restomod =)
boats rock, but don't rock the boat

I have an 08 X14 and everything here is accurate. The roominess, power with the MCX, and versatility make this an amazing boat. Surfing is not an option and the lack of rear freeboard, especially, would terrify me if I were crossing another boat's wake. My kids grew up on this boat wakeboarding and skiing but now they're not around to use it much so unfortunately, I'm going to sell my X14. I'm in mourning. I never thought I'd ever sell this boat. I also own an 15 X46, which is great for surfing but forget waterskiing behind it, even though they say you can and there's a pre-programmed configuration for doing so.
