  • Prop ding from sandbar - repairable?

    Hello Team,
Last summer I got into too shallow of water and the prop hit an underwater sandbar. Here is a photo. With subsequent use I did not notice anything different - no vibration, strange noise, et. Information on the Prop is: WakePro 787 5/16 OJ14.75 x 15.5. This is on a '16 X30 with the 6.0L engine.

Can this be repaired? If so by whom?

Anything else I should be checking as a result of this?

Easy fix. Local prop shop or back to the manufacturer. OJ is a reputable prop manufacturer and usually is expedient with service.

Yes, that’s an easy repair. A ding that minor is very unlikely to cause any collateral damage.
If you don’t own a spare I’d suggest contacting OJ directly to purchase one. Purchase a spare and they’ll likely repair that ding for free.

Yup - Repairable - If you don't have any vibration, then it is only one blade and balance is good. Always good to have a spare, this way while one is being fixed, your still on the water!

I had a great prop guy locally (unfortunately he passed away) he was super talented, lowest cost around. $25/blade and $25 to balance, funny though, while I would think I only had one bad blade, he would always hold it up, look at it and say "Nope, all 4 are bent, needs balance" so $125, have it for you in 3 days! Still way, way cheaper than anybody around!!! His prop fixes were better than a new prop! Every new OJ prop I have had, decent, however looking at the prop wash always just a bit off, before/after his repairs, they were way more even on each side!

If you don't have any vibration, I wouldn't repair that. I've had a lot of prop's repaired by OJ directly. While very good, they aren't always perfect. Repairing damage that minor may result in more vibration than you have now.

Completely disagree. I'm amazed this damage is not noticeable while under load. Send it to OJ and buy a spare. When you buy a prop, Eric usually will repair your damaged prop at no charge.
Screws fall out all the time, the world is an imperfect place.

This won't apply to your prop but..

I bought a prop from OJ and as others have stated, that purchase entitled me to one free prop repair. However, I found out that my prop was not repairable due to a small tear on one of the blades. No missing metal, just a tear.
I'm 100% happy I bought a new OJ prop, but I probably should have snapped a pic or something to send to OJ for confirmation the old prop was repairable.

In considering getting a spare, I wonder if I just get the exact same prop or something different? We surf 75%, board 20% and I am the only slalom skier behind our boat. OJ probably can offer insight on this question as well. Again, '16 X30 with 6.0 engine.

Just as an aside while OJ might not have done that prop my local guy will tig braze tears/cracks etc. It just depends what the shop is set for. 100% OJ will bang the prop on the factory bucks and sraighten and tune and balance. But they are not as "resourceful" as a local small prop shop so things OJ may not touch for you are often still repairable by someone who's set up to do the dirty work li

I'd only change if there is some aspect you dislike about your current prop. But keep in mind there is typically no free lunch. Everything is a tradeoff. For example if your current prop can't get the boat on plane when loaded with ballast and people for surfing, and you want to be able to do that to move location w/o draining some ballast, you can reduce the pitch of the prop. That'll give you more power to get up on plane, but it'll raise your RPMs for any particular speed and increase fuel consumption a little. It'll also reduce top speed. Best bet is to call Eric at OJ and discuss the options and tradeoffs with him.
