  • XT20 Weight Reduction?

We currently own a 2017 XT20 for our lake. The town has historically only limited lengths to 20' but recently came down and limited the 'certified weight' of boats to those under 4,000lbs. I think we're at 4,500 dry weight certified through Mastercraft. Is there any easy way to get our XT20 under 4,000lbs?

Without removing some significantly heavy part of the boat like the tower or windshield I don't believe it'd be possible to get under the dry weight listed by MC. You'll always have the weight of fuel, gear, and people on top of that dry weight too.

I'd probably try to see about getting your boat grandfathered in somehow, or gather any other affected parties and petition. How big is the lake?

If they don't budge, it sounds like a different lake or different boat is the only solution :-/

Buy a ProStar and start slalom skiing

If they want a 'certified' weight of less than 4000 lbs it sounds like they are going to use the spec plate as the reference. So even if you did remove the tower (as an example) the spec plate or the values they get from the manufacturer based on the hull number would still be the same.

As a possibility, I found a couple of references for the NXT that list a dry weight of 3900 lbs. The mastercraft owner's manual has a weight of 4500 lbs listed but I'm guessing the math is different. Might be worth calling Mastercraft for a clarification.

Would you like to even trade for a 99 Maristar 210? I happen to have one! 20' 9" in length with the swim platform and 2900 lbs dry weight.

Kidding about the swap to try and bring some humor here. Good luck.

You can do an engine swap with some oars

Maybe not the direction you were hoping to go but.....consider a 08-11 X2, they have the same hull and for whatever reason were dry weight rated at about 3500# You would lose Gen II though, as the '13-'14 models are heavy again

Yeah, I hear you on the ProStar suggestion, which we do slalom ski but we also LOVE surfing. Lake is a decent size, we didn't mind some of the restriction but this < 4,000lbs is pretty ridiculous. Besides a new ProStar, NXT 20 or Ski Nautique, there are literally no other watersports boats under 4,000lbs. It pains me to consider getting rid of our XT20 for something older or less capable, if that makes sense.

I'd just find a new lake if we didn't own property.

I believe they're trying to cater to all the older folks who want to just bop around in their pontoons. Ironically, the town does boat tours and the tour boat pontoons make wakes 3x times larger than our surf wakes.

I’m curious, how are they enforcing this 4,000lb limit?

Lakes have to start enforcing rules when your "ski/wake" boat is pushing the same weight as a 30ft cuddy cruiser @4500lbs+.... without ballast.

Not everyone enjoys 3-4ft rollers coming over their bow.

Maybe if your stereo system is obnoxious then you're over the weight limit!

Huh, that's really interesting. I wonder if we'll see more of these "stripped down" editions as lakes continue to institute more restrictions to limit the heavier surf barges.

Take the motor out and call it a luxury rowboat. That should get you under the 4,000lbs. It will be one heck of a workout too.

Is there any way you could reproduce the spec plate so it reads a number less than 4000? I can't remember if these things are a decal or an actual Al plate.

Those are capacity plates. Altering one is a federal offence Under the U.S. Coast Guard Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971.

If you like to gamble, then go for it. Don't be surprised if your boat ends up in impound.
