2002 X-Star LTR 330 ran too much oil, solid engine light (defalt) code12 no start

  • 2002 X-Star LTR 330 ran too much oil, solid engine light (defalt) code12 no start

    Before I put it in the water this year, my spark plugs were causing a misfire. Got a set of new plugs, and it started up just fine seem to fix the issue and the engine light never came on. Change the oil and change the oil filter put it in the water and ran fine. I checked the oil multiple times out of the water and in the water and thought the level was good. Yesterday, the second day out, we were cruising, and the engine just shut off, and the engine light instantly came on. We were dead in the water, and it would not start with a solid engine light. I checked the oil and it was quite high once home and on the trailer. The engine light is now solid, and it cranks fine, but will not start. Fuel pump is engaging. I took some oil out of the engine, and now is not low but well below the top full mark. I checked the codes with the paperclip method and only got the default code12. No other codes came up after flashing code 12 3 times. The engine light still comes on solid, and stays on. It normally turns off after the fuel pump engages. I tried to reset the engine light with a paperclip method by putting the throttle at full open and back while key is in the on position, Engine light still solid. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Be careful here, higher than normal oil level can be an indicator of water in the oil.

    12 isn't a code, it it simply telling you the diagnostic system is working properly.

    What do you mean by this: "It normally turns off after the fuel pump engages." The MIL goes off ? Mine comes on when I turn the key to ON but then turn off after I crank the boat. Please elaborate.

      Is there water mixed in with your oil? A very common reason to have rising oil level is water getting into the crankcase and raising the level. Two common causes of that are cracked exhaust manifolds leaking water back into the exhaust valves. Second common cause is blown head gasket letting water go between a cooling passageway into a cylinder. If you do have water getting into the oil, then it's pretty important to get that out of the engine ASAP. It doesn't take long for rust to start forming on critical engine parts.

      On the engine light and not starting, I have no idea on that. That wouldn't be caused in any kind of direct way I can think of by having water getting in the oil. But I've never had an LTR or worked on one, so I'm not terribly knowledgeable on LTR specifics.

        I just meant that normally the engine light turns off. When I put the key in the on position, the engine light comes on the fuel pump and gauges, and then the engine light turns off before cranking.

          She's been sitting for 24 hours so I figured any water would be in the drain line, took little oil out this morning and it sat for a while, and there's no water in the container. How else do I check for water? I looked inside the main valve on top and it looks normal I guess. No visible signs of water, though, I guess that would be in the form of bubbles?. Do I need to let all the oil out before checking the oil filter?

          I'm such a newb I appreciate your help.

            I did notice this thing on the hull. Inside the it has a wire that goes to the gas tank wires

              So do you think you possibly put in too much oil ? Sounds like there is no water and it would be obvious if there was enough to noticeably raise the level.

                    I got nothing.

                    Generally speaking for any engine, water in oil typically looks like a milky or chalky oil mixture, not so much separated as in fuel and water. That is where you would find water in a container separated from the fuel. Oil, not so much.

                    If you saw pure oil this morning, and it was not a milky consistency, that indicates no water in the oil.

                    Do I need to let all the oil out before checking the oil filter?

                    I would drain the oil unless you know the filter inlet is above the oil level in the oil pan. If not, you'll have oil run out the filter fitting.

                    That said, most filters I see in my antiquated world are mounted sideways and when removing the filter (oil pan drained) I lose oil briefly until I get the filter off and turned up correctly. However removing the filter serves no value at this point unless you do indeed drain the oil pan and find milky looking oil, then the filter would also need to be removed.

                      Tried to start it up and it started for a quick second and then died.

                      I was having a no start issue like I said a few weeks ago, but I figured the new spark plugs is what fix the issue. There was no check engine light with the failing spark plugs either I will check for spark once I have a extra hand.

                        So back to your engine issue, you turn the key and the engine turns over but doesn't start? Is that right ?

                          I definitely put too much oil in. It was well above the full line.

                            Easy to do. I add a few quarts, wait a minute or two, check the oil level, and the add one quart at a time checking the level in between until full. I also do the old fill the filter with oil trick to prevent a low oil level in the sump.

                              I've heard too much oil in the engine could cause the oil to not distribute properly and could cause the engine to overheat
