Amoebas

I have a member in the ski club (who will remain nameless bc he's on TT) that is worried about amoebas and ecoli risk after hard rains here.... Another member wears a nose plug.... I don't understand why there is such concern...? I mean if you go and use nose plugs for amoebas, what about your mouth, ears, skin/pores peehole or butthole?

Let the fun begin, I've been laughing about this crap all day long on private text....

I little girl got one a few years ago on Lake LBJ the same time we were down there. Stuff happens.

If I were you, I'd take a bunch of plugs for all the above mentioned.

Amoebas and ecoli do not enter from rain

Amoeba breed in stagnant warm water that has no circulation. The lake we ski in is spring fed and probably doesn't get above 80* all year long. It also has very good circulation. There is vegetation in the lake is good and the lake is healthy. Ecoli may enter the lake from all of the fields behind the lake where cows chit all over. The runoff may run next to a cow turd or two but the ammount off possible ecoli vs ppm of water that it would take to hurt someone is not happening. The lake will filter itself and the water is actually clean.

Btw the amoebas can also enter through an eye or heck a paper cut.



A nose plug used for someone w sinus problems is one thing. Protection against the amoeba is ridiculous.



This is like don't go outside bc we might catch West Nile virus from a mosquito.

Not sure about ecoli, but I know the amoebas enter through the nose:

I know they are in the Lakes I visit. I avoid stagnant areas, and sticking my nose in the sand.

Naegleria, the brain eating ameoba is real and present in warm Southern waters. There have been rare cases in Missouri and one in Minnesota also but Texas and Louisianna make the majority of cases. It enters your brain through the vessels in your nose. If it entrered somewhere else, it would get filtered in your spleen and would not make you sick. Nose plugs are definitely a good idea. Other plugs, unless that is your thing, are probably not necessary! No evidence that the incidence is increasing so not related to global warming.
