  • 1991 Prostar 190 (PICS)

Wanted to get some thoughts on a 1991 Prostar 190 with the 351 in it. It also only has 350 hours. Its in great shape, other than one tear in the upholstery. Gelcoat looks great.

They are asking $8500... any thoughts on this price?

I saw the Craigslist ad for that boat but can't find it at the moment. Post the connection if you want. My thoughts initially were, could be a great boat at a good buy. If I'm not mistaken it's a one owner and he's wanting a bigger boat?

$8500 sounds reasonable to me if it is mechanically sound and the only problem with the interior is the one tear. Those are great ski boats. I had a '90 several years ago.

Small pics make it tough to see. If the rest of the interior is ok, and particularly if the tear can be repaired sounds like a good deal based on the low hours. Any chance of a good pic of the tear and the engine? If the engine compartment and storage areas are clean that's a good sign. A clean trailer is even better. If the tear is on a seam it's likely an easy fix. If it's somewhere inconspicuous you may be able to stitch it up reasonably. Great boat in good colors for sure. Have you had a chance to water test yet? This would start to give you a feel for motor and the running gear. A compression test would also be a good idea, as would checking the oil and transmission fluid after the test drive. Also watch for excessive water in the hull.
If it's as clean as it looks, start trying to haggle, but I think it's a decent deal at a glance.

Aren't a 90 and 91 completely different hulls? According to this history, the 91 hull was a completely new design from the 87-90 hull. My understanding is the 91-94 hull is very desirable.

Really nice looking boat. Careful on the tear though. Where is it? If the vinyl is very dry and brittle, I would consider the cost of replacing and take that into consideration of the price. If there is a tear in one place chances are more will develop. I looked at a '91 that LOOKED great but I turned it down just because of the vinyl.

The price was the same but by the time you add the upholstery in, it was too pricey. Just my....

Correct. 87-90 same hull. 91-94 same hull. 95-97 same hull. The 91-94 are touted as one of the best slalom wakes ever.

OP, that's a good price on that boat. If its mechanically sound, I would snatch it up.

I certainly hope you get this. Looks like great condition other than that tear.

You could likely get someone to recover that seat with the tear for about 100-150.

I'd try to get the boat OTD @ between $7500-$8000. Use the tear as leverage. Bring cash and stick to your guns. Do not bring $8500. They will not (in most cases) let you leave over $500-$1000 if you show him a stack of hundreds.

Good luck. Nice boat. I like the red.

Right, my mistake. Even looking at the boat in the first picture, I can tell that the hull is different than the 90.

Looks like a good deal to me.
