Do I need to upgrade my boat lift? Help me save $7500!!!

I have a 4000lb Shorestation hydraulic lift. It was perfect for my Prostar 197 which weighed in around 3200 lbs or so. I switched to an x14v late last summer and with a full tank of gas and limited equipment we estimate it to be around 4000 lbs.

So, I looked into trading for a new 6000lb Shorestation lift and the cost was going to be $7,500. Ugh! I really don't want to pay for something I wouldn't really need.

The funny thing too about it is they use the same motor according to the dealer I am working with. The difference is mainly the hardware etc. is more robust. So, what would I really be getting?

I am hoping someone who knows more about these lifts could give me some advice. I am thinking the lift has got to have some leeway in terms of weight.

The lift I would be turning in is a 2009 and the new one would be a 2014.

The sad part is I wanted to get a second quote and I called this other dealer in the area and they never got back to me. Called again, left a message and same thing. WTH? Apparently they don't like to sell boat lifts.

Not sure where in the midwest you're located, but I'd give Marine Dock & Lift a call. They're in Center City, MN. Dwight runs a top-notch operation. Highly recommended!

Don't just call for a quote though. If anyone can give you a straight answer on if you need to upgrade your lift, its Dwight.

A 5500lb Hydraulic Lift is just over 5000 bucks. They are in St. Johns, MI.

4000 lbs lift okay for a 2013 X14v

It seems to be okay but the hydraulic motor sounds like it is straining. Do I stick with it or look for a 6k lbs lift?

I think you could upgrade some components to your lift and be ok. An easy one is stainless steel cables, but the hydraulic motor will definitely be hot after each use. That's the piece that will probably fail first.

I contend that any lift can withstand more weight than spec'd. What % over is dependent on the manufacturer, IMO. ShoreStation is a good lift. I would feel comfortable going over the weight limit on mine. Just lower it in the water before people start piling in.

I am leaning towards sticking with the lift I have. Perhaps when my wife let's me get the x-46 I can get a bigger lift then.

A 3950lb dry weight boat on a 4000lb lift sounds fine to me.

My x2 at 3500 dry weight has been sitting on a 4000# lift for 3 yrs no problem. X14v is a tad heavier I think 300# or so. You should be fine. Do you have 2 or 3 floats?
