Has anyone heard anything about RGC and Porta Dock boat lifts? Also do you know if a 6000lb manual lift would be hard to crank?

EI have an RGC VL60124. It's the 124" wide 6000lb vertical lift. I have had it for 4 years now. The first year I used the crank. It is super easy to crank, but takes A LOT of revolutions. It is a double reduced main cable, so it is geared pretty low. That is nice because it is easy to crank, and keeps less tension on the main cable. The downside is the number of turns it takes. After the first year, I bit the bullit on the direct drive unit. The AC direct drive unit is a very nice drive, and is very heavy duty. Probably the best cable hoist drive unit I have ever operated.
Overall, the lift has been very good. They make a nice deep canopy, which I love, compared to the shore station i had before. The shorestation canopy was too shallow to keep water out of the boat in storms. With the rgc, I lower the tower and tuck the boat right up in. We get gusts up to 80ish mph during severe thunderstorms, and my boat stays dry.
I have never had a problem with this lift yet.
That said, a 6000lb RGC is not as heavily built as a 6000lb shorestation. However, from my experience, shorestation overbuilds more than any other boat lift that I have seen up here. I have certainly tested my 6k RGC. With full fuel, lead, and gear, my 13 XStar was well over 6k and the lift handled it like a breeze.
I only use shorestation as a comparison because that is the other popular brand around here.....For the money, I think an RGC is a great lift. If they were the same price as a shorestation, I would buy the shorestation.

Agree with the FourFourty...
RGC (or R&G) lifts are awesome...I would definitely buy another.
I do not like Shorestation..1) Canopies...they do not come down far enough on the sides...with ours, you can crank the boat up all the way and not have to cover the boat at all 2) My buddy's 190 was hard to crank up and he had the correct lift for his boat and 3) Shorestation had some funky bars in the way from allowing easy access into the boat.
Hey, just my opinion...

I have a "lakeside" lift company, and judging by the pictures, it is made by the same company that makes the R&G lifts.
I've had mine for 4 years, going on 5, and no issues. It survived a 75 mph windstorm broadside, and when I was convinced the canopy would be gone!

Can't go wrong with a ShoreStation. Things are bullet proof. We are going on our 3rd season with ours and it still looks like the day we bought it. They are pricey but def worth the money. Ours is only a 4000lb but we hand crank it and it's not bad.sigpic
