  • Used 1998 X-Star Pricing

I'm looking to get into the Mastercraft family in the near future! I've grown up around boats with I/O's but want to get a family boat that we can surf/wake-board behind mainly. But with some slalom occasionally.

I've come across a 1998 X-Star locally, not v-drive, that has a new engine with 40hours on it.

The interior is shot and the hull needs a good polish and wax. I'm wondering if 11K is reasonable for the boat with a new engine but possibly 5-6K in vinyl and carpet needed? (I'm looking to use for a few months and redo the interior this fall/winter).

I love the idea of getting into a mechanically reliable boat for around 15K with the interior redone, but I'm wondering if I should hold out until the fall and look for a v-drive boat since we will be mainly wake boarding and surfing?

It is basically a Prostar 205. Your proper point of comparison would be how much you can get a similarly optioned 96-98 Prostar 205 for. I think good condition 205s typically go in the low 10s, 15 is for immaculate.

For a 96-98 205 in good condition you can get anywhere from 15-17 depending on your location, so I guess what you have to look at is if you pay 11k, put 4 or 5 more in it then you are at what its worth. I don't see the point in messing with something like that unless you can get in it for a deal. If you are going to have full price in it by the time youre done plus you are dealing with the headaches then I'd just buy one that's still nice.

Thanks guys, makes sense about comparing 205's since they are the same hull from what I've read. If I can't get a deal to make it worth my time to get the interior redone it's might not be worth it.

Secondary to that do you guys think I should seriously consider saving to get a v-drive boat? I've got a family of 5 with kids 7,5 and 2. I'm wondering about the room if I'm going to be adding ballast for wake boarding and surfing.

I have a 98' 205 dd and I wish i had a vdrive. If you are worried about wakeboarding and surfing then definitely do what whats necessary to get in a v-drive. More room and youre going to really struggle to get a surf wave out of a 205. Plus there isn't alot of storage in the 205dd and once you start throwing bags in the floor it gets even worse.

Yeah, after browsing around the forums and google, it seems that is the consensus with a surf wake. It sounds like I just need to wait a bit, save a little more money and then pull the trigger.

I don't want to get into something I'll regret and want to upgrade immediately.

You can get a pretty good wave out of a 205. Just go over to the surf section and check the giant DIY surf shaper thread.

Yes, that's it. I've checked around locally here in Knoxville on reskining and carpet and it's going to run 4-6k depending on who does it.

Even with a new engine it seems high for the remaining work required. Plus, I really think I need a v-drive with a family of 5.

                  Decisions!😜

Solution: 2 boats, one for skiing and one for everything else.

Kidding aside, I think what you want to look for as a family boat is a Maristar. They're larger than the 205 and 205V, and are decent all around boats, especially the 210VRS.

Thanks, I've never set foot in either, really just trying to get more info right now. Extra room is always a good thing!

                      Thanks again!

We have a friend with a 1999 210VRS, and our X-Star definitely feels more cramped than the Maristar. And most of us agree the 210VRS slalom wake is better than the X-Star.
