We opted for no cable, just use the amazon fire stick, appleTV and a digital antenna from amazon, which has stopped working for some reason. But then I found, like other's have said, that my provider, UVerse, has an app for the ipad/iphone, etc. that will allow you to watch whatever you want. Because I have appleTV, I just airplay whatever is on my ipad to the TV. Funny thing is that when I try to watch local Chicago NBC for news in the morning, half the time it says I'm out of the area to be able to watch it - locality issue. But then if I move around the house and restart it, it works. Very odd. I only pay for internet/wifi at the lake.

Our lake house is not in the range of local TV (OTA) stations. We have to have satellite or cable to watch the weather (we live in a tornado area).

Dish anywhere is LEGAL and provide by the satellite provider. The speed of the internet controls the quality of picture much more so than does the age of the computer. I would suggest using a computer that is new enough that it has an HDMI connector (of any of the sizes). That will allow you to connect to an a/v receiver or directly to the TV.

Has anyone done anything with a consumer grade VPN or tunnel to allow network connectivity between the two residence?

Alabama has a warm enough fall that football starts before ski season ends. All but a few have left the lake at that point. Best time of the year. Go out in the morning, watch football at night. No lines at the marina and the lake is glass every morning. So yeah, I need a TV at the lake for fall.

lol the amount of devices connect really does not matter.

what matters is how many will be doing stuff at the same time...

if you have 3 tvs streaming netflix at 10mbps you will be maxed out. think of it that way

This! Your devices aren't going to be pulling a great deal of data when they are idle. 25Mbit should be plenty. This would allow you about 4 simultaneous streams on netflix in HD. If you are planning on having a ton of people at your house, the thing you need to do is a decent router to handle the traffic.

As for a TV, I really like the reviews at rtings.com. They do a great job.

Thanks for all of the ideas... I think that we will be changing our home service to Dish and utilizing the Dish Anywhere service as well.

Thanks for the recommendations. Incidentally, what VPN would you choose for Netflix? I've never used such services before. My colleagues advised me to try out the best vpn mac for this. But I'm not sure if this is a decent option.

Why do you need a VPN? Are you tunneling back to your main home?
