  • ECM module Differences

Does anyone know how to tell the physical differences of the 2005 MCX (MEFI 4 ECM) and the 2006 MCX (MEFI 5 ECM) The reason is that the PerfectPass is loaded into the ECM on the 2006 MCX. You only have to install a plug that comes with the PP. The 2005 and earlier MCX has to be flash with the program. Aaron at PP said that the physical differences should be obvious. My X-30 is a 2006 but is was built early in 2005 so I am not sure what it has. My dealer is getting me an answer but I thought maybe someone on here might know.
    Thanks

interesting, great they came out with a 5 ECM that includes the PP upgrade...last year when i upgraded '05 197 from cruise to PP, had to have the dealer flash the ecm (that's a whole 'nother story on that lengthy process)...

so what exactly does the ECM control, is it like the engine's computer???

probably could get the answer directly from contacting Indmar...

"so what exactly does the ECM control, is it like the engine's computer???"

It IS the engine's computer. With all of the EPA and C.A.R.B. regulations, the only way a production motor will meet the standards is with fuel injection, governed by a computer. I don't think anyone makes a mechanical injection system, although the first ones were. Those were made for speed and research, not low emissions. Thing is, computers do so many little mundane things so well and so fast that it would be a PITA to do them mechanically.

MEFI 4 has been around since about 2000 and had done its job, so it was time to pass the torch. MEFI 5 is also ready to go for the catalytic convertors, O2 sensors, etc.

rlwiley- I'm confused- your boat is a 2006 and it was made in early 2005? They don't start new model year production till about August.

        Mefi 5 Vs Mefi 4

I have attached a couple of photos. The ECM with the three connectors on the top is the MEFI 5. The photo with the smaller ECM's with two connectors ate the MEFI 4 series ... MEFI 4, 4A and 4B.

Early 05 meaning probably one of the first 06s in 05. I believe mine is probably the ECM 4 b/c it has no plugs on the top and it has 2 or 3 on the bottom.
          Thanks
          Where are the photos?

Interesting... The MEFI5s look alot like the current car ECMs. Boats are catching up in terms of terminals required, throughput capacity, memory, etc...
