  • LT1 1994 water pump leaking?

Ok so I need some help. Just rebuilt the raw water pump all good. Just took it for a test drive and I have a stream of water coming down onto the crankpully and belt from the water pump on top is there a seal up in behind that connect to cam etc? How hard to rebuild the circulating pump and how to get it off? If anyone has any dealings with this would be a great help from here in Northern Ontario Canada. Cheers

    Thanks in Advance

Sounds like your circulating water pump is gone. On a LT1, they are driven from behind by the cam shaft. I am not aware of any rebuild kit for these, and the Indmar replacement is over $400! I ended up replacing mine with an automotive grade unit for about $160 USD (give or take). Only difference is the impeller is not stainless steel, and I had to plug the heater hose output on the new pump. Good Luck!

Thanks the water is just teaming from the weep hole. So basically buy an automotive water pump and replace. Did you change the oil seal while you were there or just inspect and check? I probably will change since I am right there. Thanks again.

Honestly, I didn't do either. At the time, it didn't even occur to me to check it. The boat was still new to me and was in the middle of the season. Add to that, I didn't know those seals wear out, as it happened before my Team Talk days. I did take pics, however. I'll dig them up and post them shortly.

You mean, a regular non-LT-1 water pump? Nope. It won't bolt on and will kill the engine- the LT-1 uses reverse-cooling.

Make sure the replacement pump has a seal that will work with water, rather than coolant- water doesn't lubricate the way coolant does.

Hi Jim I bought an LT1 water pump. Planning to plug the heater exit and mount. Looks like it should fit not sure about the seal? The sales guys says it has a lifetime warranty on it from Gates as long as I have the bill. Well I will let everyone know how it goes.

                  Cheers
