  • Tab problem - '19 X Star?

Went out yesterday afternoon for some wake boarding and surfing with some buddies. All went well until we headed back toward the dock. Take off across the lake and as the boat came up on plane it listed severely to the left. 3 big guys were sitting on the port side so one of them moved over behind me and then the boat quickly listed to the right. The guy moved to the center of the reversible seat and we listed left again. It was bad to the point that I felt the boat was becoming uncontrollable. I reduced power to idle and as we came off plane the boat turned nearly 90 deg hard to the right.

My thought is maybe the starboard tab is hanging down? I reversed for 5 seconds and that didn't help. Also tried manually lowering and raising the tabs. Still no change. It was getting dark so we idled back to the dock and called it a night.

Any ideas of something to check when I go out tomorrow?

    TIA,

    Chris

software glitch. same thing happen to me, sharp turn and list to starboard at ~20mph.
I can't explain why this occurred but this could potentially become hazardous if it happens at the wrong place and time,

Thanks Snork. What was the solution? Reload the current software or a new S/W version?

On my 2019 they replaced the stock actuators with a stronger, beefier model. Dealer said the actuators were failing on these big heavy boats (Star, X24) so they found a fix with a better actuator. Often times water gets sucked into them and they begin working intermittently.

I am on my third actuator on a 2019 XStar with 80 hours. One failed and would not raise and lower the tab, one snapped in half at the actuator shaft. My dealer is amazing and came out and replaced the same day on all occasions. Tech told me he is replacing about 10 of these a month. Hoping MC starts replacing warranty claims with the new actuators on the 2020 models.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have reached out to the dealer asking for advice. Unfortunately the dealer is an 8 hour drive from me. Taking it now essentially ends my season. I'm hoping I can limp through the next few weeks and then get it done over winter.

Any info on what model etc actuator?

When this happened on the Xstar that I demo'd I thought it felt like the switchback ballast tank wasn't empty and was transferring 500 lbs of weight side to side.

I agree. It's kind of scary. I verified all ballast is empty. Dealer asked me to run the tabs fully down and then retract to see if one is going crazy. The tabs indicate that they're fully retracted but we know that can be misleading. The boat is currently on the trailer so my plan is to check the tabs this afternoon. What seems odd to me is that it seems both tabs would have to be malfunctioning based on the boat listing left - right - left again.

Any other ideas or suggestions are welcome. I'll be sure to keep the board posted on the resolution.

My NXT is not this sophisticated, so I may be way off base (and not intending to be sarcastic), but is it possible cruise was accidentally set some weird way and it was trying to go into surf mode / deploy the tab?

Not hurting my feelings at all! I did double-check that it was in "drive" mode. The only tab that should have activated was the center - I had single tab autolaunch selected on.

Bugs happen for sure.. I always power cycle the boat when things get a little wacky... and typically this can happen 1-2x per weekend. See if that helps reset things for you as well. I can’t believe a ‘19 would have an actuator problem already. I have almost 200 hours on my ‘18 x23 and don’t have an actuator problem... I use the [email protected]@ out of the boat. Also, for giggles, if the power cycling doesn’t work, which battery setting do you normally switch to? Go to combined just to see if it makes a difference as well. Could be a your primary needs to be charged fully if that fixes the problem as well

As mentioned, there are actuator issues with some of the '19s on all models. They claim to have a new actuator after working with Lenco to find a resolution.
The problem is the tabs are not resetting to the correct angle. I have had this happen when surfing - wave is great, rider falls, we go again and the tab didnt go to the set position so now they wave is mediocre. Sometimes reversing for 3 seconds will reset it as a quick fix.
I have also seen this happen with autolaunch where one tab does not retract - manually pushing the up button will still bring the tab up to the correct position.

2020 actuators and position sensing (which is not live on current 2020 software) should solve this and allow you to more accurately customize tab settings.

Thanks for the responses. Went out yesterday and had no issues. After multiple surf sessions the wave still looked great. Before heading to the dock I manually ran the tabs all the way down and then back to zero. No listing on the way back in and didn’t have to move people all over the boat either. Keeping my fingers crossed that just doing that once or twice a day solves the problem. However, none of us should have to do that. My hope is that we can have new actuators retrofitted to the 2018+ fleet that will solve these issues once and for all.

Replacements are only going to those that are having issues, so you will have to bring it up to your dealer.

I don't believe the new 2020 actuators can be retrofitted as MC has already stated that there is specific software for 2020 boats that is different than years prior.
