  • Heater Hose Removal?

    Hey TeamTalk

I’m attempting to remove my factory heater from my 2020 XT22 to validate it is or is not a 20k BTU heater and if it is, I’m going to replace with a 40k BTU unit.

I’ve got everything unscrewed/unhooked except the two heater hoses. I’m not a mechanic so what is the secret to get these off the copper inlet/oulets? As you can see, I’ve mucked them up a bit already-

Usually the secret is to twist them to break the seal before trying to pull them off... but you need to be careful no matter what you do, as the copper is pretty soft and easy to bend underneath the hose. You can probably cut the hose just after the pipe nipple and still have enough slack to reconnect it after - but verify that. Worst case scenario, you can always add more hose with a hose barb butt connector. Much cheaper to add more hose than to muck up your heater core.

Good timing on this project, I just started looking into this too. Taking measurements on a 2021 X24 ( I don't have my boat yet) the heater core is not physically big enough to be a 40k BTU unit. I also was told that it is not a Heatercraft brand - they are using something else.

The 2021 X24 I was looking at had 4 x 2" heater outlets. I was wondering if all boats have the same setup. I contacted Heatercraft to see if they had a 40k heater setup that had the 4 x 2" outlets...just to make it an easier install. I see a picture of one on their website, but couldn't find it to order.

Heatercraft is just down the street from me, so I can go there and ask some questions in person if I need to, but again, I don't have my boat yet.

the other question I have is the fan. Will the stock fan fit on the 40k btu housing, or do I need to buy a new fan too.

I usually get a small screwdriver under the hose and pry all the way around gently to break the hose away from the copper.

Or, as other poster suggests, if there us enough slack, cut it with a snips just past the fitting so you get a square cut and use a utility knife to cut the rubber tube off the fitting.

Heat gun. Heat those suckers up and they pop right off.

I watched the dealer remove stuck on hoses they used a mechanics pick to break the seal. Looked effortless

sga173br rad hose pick and a gentle twist . Gear clamps and thermal cycles make 'm stick good.

I use a blow nozzle. Point the tip down in the crack PFFT while pulling and they usually blow off.

The air both pops the seal and expands the tube.

I ended up cutting the hose to remove them. Yes, with the hot/cold cycles, they stick on there really well! It looks like I’ll have enough hose length to reconnect them.

But, like MainiacMikes mentioned, the heater core is from Maradayne Marine. Number on the back is TA8001584. I didn’t find anything that matches that number either via Maradyne or MC.

So, I don’t know what BTU this unit is putting out. I’ll call Maradyne this week and see if I can find out.

These are the cats azz for removing stuck hoses, especially exhaust.

I always thought that the stock heaters were 28k units because they're too small to be 40k units. It should be an easy upgrade to put in a 40k unit. I've also thought about putting two heaters in series to have additional output but I'm not sure how many BTU's the heater hose line can support.

I have a heat gun and should have used that to help assist the hoses off but spaced it.

                            For other's reference, here is the heater/fan unit in my 2020 XT22. The heater unit measures approximately 9.5" L x 4" W x 6.5" H.

I left a message for Maradyne yesterday but haven't received a call back yet. I'm going to try them and HeaterCraft again today.

Thanks for the info. I still want to upgrade my heater as well. I have an email into heatercraft, but no response yet. They are 10 minutes from me, so I may just drive over there one of these days.

EE- I talked to Jason at Stancraft, he suggested putting a wye splitter on the heater hoses to supply and return the coolant to run a second heater. He mentioned that in their custom wood boats (that run ilmores) they run up to 4 heater cores to make sure all passengers get good heat. He thinks its more about the distance the heated air has to travel in the tube than it does the btu output. He suggested adding a second heater under the observer seat for that side of the boat.
