  • Wakesurfing in a X-30

Getting ready for wakesurf season here in the Pacific Northwest. Have a 2007 X-30 and wondering if anyone out there has mastered ballast for wakesurfing. I had a 750 flyhigh in the rear port compartment last season but ready to add more. Bought another 750 that I may use on the port side seat or floor? Have the three built-in ballast tanks also (fill them all?). Anything else needed or any suggestions on setup? Thank you -

Any 2006+ X-30 owners out there surfing? Like to hear from you on this thread on any tips, etc.,.. anything on surfing. Thanks everyone -

Just putting this out there for other X-30 owners that are wakesurfing. Was out on the lake today but not in the water yet as it was 55 degrees. However, I was experimenting with ballast setup. Last year I was surfing with standard ballast and a 750 fly high in the port rear locker. I'm aiming for a bigger wake this season.

So for this summer, in addition to the 750 in the port locker and standard port and kgb filled, I put another 750 on the floor of the port side. The wake was significantly larger and clean with the trim all the way down. Speed was around 13 mph. Just need some sunshine now!

I have a '07 X30, and just bought the Fly high 500's to put in the rear locker. with stock ballast, I liked the wake it made, I cannot wait to try it this weekend with the additional ballast. So, you have been successful and noticed a big difference in the trim plate setting? I tried that last summer and it seemed to change the shape a bit. With the added weight now, will it make a difference if I set it all the way down?

Thanks for the info. I have been looking at wakesurfing in my '06 X-30, but haven't made the leap.

Yes, the trim plate all the way down cleans the wake nicely for us. Since the last post, I have moved the 750 on top of the seat (roped off) and all the way forward to the glove box. The other 750 still in the back port locker. All standard tanks filled or can leave the far tank (starboard in this case) empty depending on passenger weight in the boat. Also carry some weight in the bow to lengthen the sweet spot (people or fly high "bricks"). Driving straight at 14.3 mph on the perfect pass. We really have a terrific wake for surfing. I am 180 lbs and I'm riding a 4'3" Hyperlite Swell and easily staying in the sweet spot and the wake has significant height that I can swing way out when coming down off the wake.

Wow... surfing at 14.3 mph!?!?! That's the fastest speed I've ever heard of. We go about 10.3 in a heavily weighted 03 x2.

Yeah, the Perfect Pass may not be "perfect" so it may vary from boat to boat and some surfers go a little slower behind our x30. It seems to help to go a little faster though when heavily weighted to lengthen the sweet spot for skim surfing. Couldn't tell you what the x2 requires.

Here's a link if you're doubting the speed. X-15 surfing at 13-14 mph:

For our 09 X-30 on the left side we put a 750 in the locker a 400 in the floor on the left side and a 150 in the walk way.Pull at about 10.3-10.8. Just with that much we get a massive wave. It seems like the right side we have to replace the 400 with another 750 to get it pumping like the regular side.

We have an 06 X2 and are looking into ballast...and where to put it. Was thinking of this:

in the floor in front of the back seat. We fill all three tanks and still want more.

                        Comments...advice?

                        Thanks.

We own an 07 X-30. This year at Lake Powell we had the luxury of having 6-8 adults in the boat for surfing. They make the best "fat sacs" since they have legs and are mobile. I simply filled the rear ballast tank on the side we were surfing, and had our adults congregate in that corner. I brought a pump and sacks, but did not need to fill them with the adults on board. We had a blast simply using the factory ballast on the one side. Having the wake plate down did clean up the wave. 11-12 mph.

I find that people plus ballast works great. If I have a few adults plus the setup I described earlier, all the better for wake size, length (and no rope). I had only adults, standard ballast and a 750 in the back corner last year, and surfed. My setup this year is much better to the point I'm working on tricks rather than concentrating on the sweet spot. I see a lot of Mastercrafts out on the lake and not much free surfing at all. So you can have fun with a rope just like you can skiing or wakeboarding but the real thrill is finding the perfect ballast setup and free surfing with no strings attached!
