  • Goofy girls

We were teaching someone (female) to surf and during the process of deciding if they are goofy or regular. The comment was made that most girls ride goofy and most guys ride regular. We thought about it and realized that our experiences matched that pattern.

So my question/survey is of the people you have pulled do you see the same pattern?

Haha, not here. Its seems to be 70-30 non goofy across the board

I thought the way to figure it out wasting stand face to face and then push them. The foot they put back to catch themselves is their back foot.

Ive always pushed them forward and the one they catch themselves with is their front foot. That's pretty funny if it works from front or back.

Sorry, but what does goofy riding mean? Wrong foot forward? Or wrong side of boat?

I know this is the way of determining front foot of slalom.

Regular is right foot back, goofy is left foot back.

is there a general acceptance of slalom stance to goofy/non goofy?

Thinking about it, I really don't snowboard or wakeboard, but the times I have I get up right foot back. But I ride a trick ski and slalom right foot forwards.

                  Is that standard?

strong foot forward for wakeboard and wakesurf IMO
pushing someone is a good indicator as well as right handed people typically are "goofy"
and yes theres many right handed people that ride "regular", we as humans adapt to many things but why do some make it difficult to ride???

Interesting fact if true...that said, it applies to our family as my daughter rides goofy and my two sons and myself ride regular.

Oh ok. Guess I'm both. I ride wakeboard both ways. Never tried, but I bet I'd be comfortable both ways on a surf board. I'm rff on slalom, have been for fifteen years. Actually thought about switching a few years ago as I was second guessing myself. Never tried it though.

I have three ways of testing "footedness"...

                            1. Push forward test, as mentioned above.
                            2. Ask "if you were to do a cartwheel, which hand would you put down first?"
                            3. Have them (as naturally as possible) step up onto the seat as if they were climbing stairs.

Usually each of those will be with the same side first (L or R). It'll even give you a two out of three in worst cases.

Guys in my crowd ride regular. All girls but one ride goofy. 6/1 ratio
Screws fall out all the time, the world is an imperfect place.
