  • 1994 prostar 205 and wakeboarding

    Hello everyone. I am new to this forum but I had a question. We currently own a 1994 prostar 205 and it has already been equipped with a tower. Our go to sport is definitely wakeboarding. Well we are on the fence of either selling our boat and upgrading to a early to mid 2000s xstar or x2. But at the same time I love our 205. But it needs work and lacking in room because of it being a DD. My question is how good could I get the wake on the 205 or would i be better off just selling and upgrading. Our 205 needs the back seat reupholstered and I would like do some odds and ends. What would y’all recommend? Thanks in advance

    Sale and upgrade. I had a 94 205. Just not, enough storage, even using tower storage. Vdrive wake, is totally different from DD.

      Although the 205 is ideal for skiing, it's less than stellar for wakeboarding. If that's your primary sport and can afford the newer V-Drives, that's going to be your best option.

          Per your comment about wakeboarding, I’d sell and get a v drive, as the boats you mention.
          Main reason for motor in the middle is for skiing. That boat is a great, desirable ski boat, especially if decent shape and maintained.
          With a little weight it can be used for wakeboarding (unless you need a 2’ + wake) but it is not as comfortable, which is why I would swap boats.

            I have the 96 DD 205, so next gen hull (and first X-star hull).

            too much focus is placed on wake size IMO, you only need a huge wake when you're REALLY good.

            I've got a thread from a few years ago how I weighted it boat for boarding.

            Take a look at the early wakeboarding videos from the mid to late 90's and you'll see what's possible with good technique. The big wake just makes it easier once you can do it.

              I feel like sometimes people do focus on wake size. Don’t get me wrong, I get the opportunity to ride behind an Axis that is loaded to the gills but with my skill set don’t think it is 100% necessary. Plus I am teaching my kids too and they don’t need a huge wake. But one thing that would be nice is the extra room so the bags aren’t lying around the boat. But at a financial standpoint we may keep the boat. Just upgrade the interior and add fuel injection. The previous owner had trouble with it and went back to carburetor. Looks like you have an awesome setup dude.

                The secret to weighting the 205 DD (pretty much any boat really) is to "sink" it rather than whack a load of weight at the back. When we board properly (wake as above) the whole floor is covered, front to back except the drivers footwell! The 205 loves weight up front and an even distribution. Doing this stops the nose from rising so much you cant see over it, keeps the handling more even and crisps the wake off nicely. It also helps having a deep lake, this one is in France and is between 100 and 250ft. The one in the UK where we ski is only around 5-6ft which makes the wake much smaller and harder

                  It will never be a V-Drive but a V-Drive will never be a Direct Drive.

                  If you have any aspirations to cross the wake on a slalom don't get a V-Drive. If you just sort of ski back and forth and tool around go V-Drive - but also know the boat really won't "sit" on plane like a DD does.

                    If you wakeboarding is your primary use get a vdrive. 205v will not cost you that much.
