  • Ported Sub Location in '03 x2

I have been thinking about installing a ported 10 or 12" sub in my 03 x2 I have seen people replace the stock free air clarion sub with a box, and other that have built a box in the bow and put a filler cushion on top to make a sort of play pen. I would like to do the second option and wondering what kind of tips you guys have. From the research I have done, it seems that the shape of the box does not matter as long as the volume meets the requirements of the sub. I would use medum density fiberboard, and would fiberglass over the MDF to make it water proof. If anybody has pics that would be really helpful.

Here is a little of what little I know about your topic; Assumption: most boats with your general configuration (open bow, under-seat storage, etc.) have a bulkhead at the driver's feet to separate or block off the driver's compartment from the front area. Without a photo to see and be sure on your machine, I'll go on this pretense.

I'd take the easy route and mount a 10 or 12" sub into the existing bulkhead. Go to the back side (inside the under-seat storage) and put in another (rear) bulkhead to close the space and as much so protect the speaker from anything sliding into it from the storage compartment. To me, it is that simple. And the effectiveness of the subwoofer to the common listener is spot on.

On another note, then comes an amplifier for the subwoofer...then maybe a second battery to power the (now) two amps (or not).

That said, I enhance the front seating area with two additional forward cabin speakers. Another easy-peasy install. Done deal. I did this (subwoofer, two additional speakers, two amps, and two batteries on an isolation relay) to a 205 a short while back.

The owner is happy with the results

Best on the install. Keep it simple and easy.

Others here know a lot more than I do about this. I manage to get by and hopefully this will give you some idea and confirmation that your approach is viable and effective.

I have the same setup as you and I have a Wet Sounds 12" Free Air sub. Very simple installation, I just cut a 12" hole where the 10" hole was. As for a box, I've seen some installs where they replace the bulkhead with a box that sticks partially into the starboard bow locker. Good luck.
