  • 05 X Star Surfing ballast question

We have a new to us 2005 X Star that we have been learning to wakeboard and surf behind. Both have came pretty natural due to previous snowboarding and skateboard experience. I ride goofy and surf the starboard side of the boat. I currently weight the boat with both rear factory tanks full (250lbs each), kgb full (500lbs from what I can tell), a 400lb and 260lb fat sac in starboard locker, 400lb fat sac as far forward in the floor and a 260 lb fat sac across the bow seat. I also have a suc gate as far back and as low as possible on the port side. The wave is pretty decent (I think) in that I can get a bit of push out of the wave and end up on the swim deck easily I'd I'm not careful. I can ride about 5-8ish feet off the back of the boat but it seems that it's easy to get too far back and not able to get back into the wave.

I'm considering getting a 1000lb bow sac to lay across the bow seats and moving the front fat sacs to where I have both 400lb sacs in the starboard locker and putting the two 260lb sacs in the port locker.

    My questions are:
will this help with making the sweet spot bigger so that the wave will be easier to ride?

Will 1000lb bow sac be too much weight in the front of the boat?

    Thanks in advance!

I never could get my Gen 2 XStar to surf goofy side... But 1000# in the front sounds a like a bit much IMO. I think you might have better luck looking for a surf gate. I saw recently that the slim style Wake Mate fits the small surface area on the gen 2's...

IBR, thanks for the response! I have a diy wake plate extremely similar to what you have mentioned and it has made a world of difference. The 1000lb in the bow may be a little excessive and I may not actually fill it all the way up but if I have to buy a new sac I'd like to get the most option for my buck. I have seen where it is more difficult to get the goofy side to work out as good as port side.

From what I see online is that the bow weight shouod make the wave longer and I was hoping that would also make the sweet spot bigger.

CLRussell, thanks, I look forward to your response as well.

I have a 08 x star and run the stock ballast with 700 lb sacks in each locker and a 500 v-bag in the nose and a mission boat gear delta suction gate and seem to get a pretty good wake (occasionally if its just me and two buddies we will throw another 750 on the floor) The Shaper made a big difference in not having to lean the boat so hard to one side and it works great on both sides!

Thanks! So it sounds like I'm on the right path with having bow weight and then adding more rear weight in the lockers.

Ok finally had time to sit down..

08 x star 6.0, not sure on prop.

Bobv5 suck gate on low step far back

750s over stock in rear lockers. Plum full, KGB full, 240 under each front seat full to the brim. 100 lbs of cooler, 300 lbs of people in the bow, 6 large me adults in the main cabin. Wave was mackin.. the more belly weight the better it seems, just have to run faster.

              Rider is 6,2 in this

Goofy wave is just as good, just no pics.

Sorry no non rider pics because I don't much care about them since they just look like a wave

I beg you to correct this. Would love to see actual starboard wave pics.

Thanks! Certainly don't want to waste time building a DIY or money on a Suck Gate if not going to get any starboard love. Port is a-okay. Thanks again!

wake gate will work on both sides -- I bought a gate from shapethewake.com -- check them out.
