  • Crossed battery wires

Ok- I was in hurry and had a boat loaded with family ready to go skiing. I connected the battery and crossed the wires- plus to minus etc.. Needless to say, we didn't go boating- boneheaded!

1996 Prostar 190, nothing smoked and all of my gauges work. The engine turns over but I'm not getting ignition. I've checked the fuses at the top of the engine- all good. Battery wires functioning. Where could the problem be? I recall hearing about his before- a fried resistor in the distributor? Any help would greatly be appreciated!

I won't be much help here, but does your boat have an ECM? Those can be highly sensitive to electrical spikes.

I think there is a 50 or 60 amp re-settable breaker on the back of the engine.

Thanks. Yes- It has an ECM. I've had a mechanic look at it and he said it was the ECM. Supposedly, there are some diodes in the ECM that were damaged. I'm told that I will need a new ECM programmed by someone in California.

Those are a hard to find. Worthing Skier here in the UK has a number of them.

Indmar will also reflash for $45 dollars.

I found on on Ebay sent it to Indmar to test and reflash -100% working condition.

Also you have an MEFI-1 but you can also use an MEFI-2 with a little modification in the wire harness.

I don't have the same boat but my ECM did go bad all the sudden. I don't think I put the battery wire on wrong, it just stopped. I had MEFIBURN.COM flash my new ECM that I got from Crate Engine Depot. MEFIBURN.COM charged me $200 though, so maybe sending it to indmar for $45 is the way to go

The ECM does have some protection against reverse polarity but the ignition module in the distributor does not. The first things to go in a reverse polarity situation are the ignition module in the distributor and the alternator. I would make sure those are checked before replacing the ECM.
