  • 'Tis the season for battery questions....

    Here's mine:

    I've always run a separate dedicated starting battery and deep cycle house battery on past boats. Swapped to my current X2 last season and it appears to have a 24 class starting battery in both locations... never even looked until I pulled them last fall as they both worked (and hopefully continue to work) flawlessly:

    Starting - Interstate 24M-XHD
    House - Centennial 24SM-8MF

    Both appear to be labeled as starting batteries. Both rated at 1000 MCA.

    Is this right? I know there's charging issues mixing house and starting on a dual charge switch (one not charging fully), but just want to know whats normal if one doesn't come back alive when we fire her back up for the season next weekend.

    My dealer puts 2 starting batteries in the new x boats with dual screens with these ratings below. You shouldn't have a charging issue. Also put a MarPro dual bank charger in and charge it up before and after or keep it plugged in if you can.

    Pulse cranking amps 1750 A
    CCA rating at -18°C (0°F) 930 A
    CA/MCA rating at 0°C (32°F) 1080 A
    Reserve capacity 195 min
    Capacity - 20 hour rate (1.75 vpc 92 Ah
    Internal resistance 2.6 mΩ @ 25°C (77°F)
    Short circuit current 5000 A

      Any opinions or experience with Odyssey 24M-725 batteries? They are spec'd as Dual Purpose Marine and are AGM. I can buy these locally, so am considering a pair of them to replace the Interstate and Centennial I have in there now.

        I prefer the Interstate models. Online didn't seem to have good reviews and being manufactured in China I'm going to stay USA with Interstate.

          If you're going to do AGM make sure you have the right charger for them or you'll be unhappy with the results. I love my AGMs but I also spent the cash for the matching charger.

            I do have an AGM compatible charger now, but thanks for the head’s up.

            That said, I actually never had to charge the batteries between boat uses last season with the ones I was running, though I also was on the water several times a week, so they never really sat long in between uses. When we were on the water, we’d run the boat a lot in the morning, and then often sit and laze for 2-4 hours with the stereo running without issue into the afternoon when the 8 million crazies would arrive.

            Having no real AGM experience, will I find this to be different using them vs. traditional wet cells? Will they need more regular charging beyond what my alternator is capable of if used similarly to my current batteries?
