  • 1998 ProStar 190 LT1 Questions

If any of this is naïve, then at least its honest. Just got a 1998 ProStar 190 LT1 with 1100 hours on it from brother in law. Is there anything particular that I need to know about this? It runs great and is in good shape but just wondering... Fuel gauge bounces and thus far, at 1/8th tank it only took 15 gallons. I guess there is a reserve? Fuel additives such as injector cleaner, good or waste of money? What to use to clean/protect the seats? Are there any gotchas? Any advice appreciated as this is my first boat. Thanks.

There are a lot of threads here about the LT-1 engine. Search the forum for multiple topics and talking points on the engine.

Here is one example. Search feature is your friend. I see at least seven threads I have bookmarked. There are many more.

Thank me now and thank me later.

Let me back up a little if I may. Welcome to this discussion forum. I am merely one of many squawkers here that come and go on a (far too often) daily basis.

You'll like the direct drive machine. The answer to your next question: yes sir, it only goes one direction in reverse. Second question; yes sir, it will pull to the right if you let loose of the steering wheel.

Never let your fuel cell drop below 1/4 capacity level of the cell. No reserve and also no forgiving electric fuel pump in the cell. Keep it above 1/4 full at all times.

Cleaners are optional. That is like asking what oil to use. You'll get every pig-trail and rabbit-hole answer under the sun from here.

Do not use Magic Eraser or any abrasive material on the vinyl. Warm soapy water, a soft scrub brush if necessary, and maybe LA Totally Awesome Cleaner (Dollar Store), then I follow on with a wipe of Aerospace 303 protectant.

Do the cooling modification (posted on the forum) or it will be "gotcha."

Practice safe boating for your family and friends. Obey all laws of the waterway. Do not pull tubers anywhere anytime. Towers are not in my liking but you did not buy the boat for me.

      Post a photo please.

      Happy boating.

waterlogged882 Thank you for the follow-up. I really do appreciate any advice, knowing that it's probably already posted in the forum somewhere. I have some 303 marine and some 303 fabric (although it said Do Not Use On Vinyl - not sure about that). Fuel level advice is noted and I will adhere to that. It does have a tower. Here is a pic. Thanks again.

Nice ProStar. So gorgeous without a tower, but hey, if you use it.

          Hell of a first boat!

Fuel gauges on boats should be viewed with suspicion, I pull my backseat and physically look at the tank before I use the boat and I have marks on the tank for every 5 gallons.

Thus far, we've only used the tower for hand rails getting in and out , and to tie the fenders on. Seems to be a lack of cleats/tie down points but it is a beautiful boat. Thanks bro-in-law for the hook-up!

Going to put it in tomorrow and do some clean-up that the wife has no patience for when she is there. "Can't we do that later and just ride?..."

That generation Prostar should have a 30 gallon tank. Replacing a 1998 fuel sender should be pretty simple and inexpensive. You can also leave it as is and take it that empty means time to return to the dock and refuel.

This is probably where your fuel sender came from:

Might need a replacement, it might just need to be adjusted.
