  • 05 X-Star Transmission Failure?? HELP

    On the lake while going about 20 mph with no load the tranny lost all drive.....no forward and no reverse. No noise was noticed, engine just started to rev up as boat slowed down. No movement at all from drive shaft in forward or reverse, all fluid appears clean and normal level, prop is untouched, shaft is fine and turns easily and smoothly. We had to be towed in and I am now wondering if I could be overlooking the obvious. So far my only conclusions are not very pleasing to think about. ONLY 278 total hours on boat. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Is it possible the shifter linkage has broken so that the transmission is just sitting in neutral while you rev it up?

      OK this is interesting. I have an '07 X-Star and I too had to be towed in last Saturday because the transmission seemed to have lost all drive. Turns out the nut on the end of the driveshaft (where it comes through the V-drive) had spun off and the shaft backed out of the coupler and stopped when it contacted the rudder. Transmission was fine there was just no spline engagement between the shaft and the coupler any longer. Any chance yours is the same problem?

        I sure was hoping for something like the loose driveshaft nut but my problem doesnt seem that simple. Everything is still in place just no movement coming out of transmission. Hey Langedp did the prop hit the rudder? I suppose you could see the transmission still moving even though prop didnt spin. Correct?

          I disconnected the linkage and shifted it by hand at tranny and no difference. Good thought, unfortunately I am not that lucky this time.

            If you put the shifter into forward and try to spin the prop by hand, are you able to turn it?

            This is obviously done while the boat is not running!

              Fortunately the prop didn't make contact with the rudder while it was spinning. I think the shaft loses contact with the coupler splines before it reaches the rudder. No signs of damage there thankfully.

              Yes, the tranny rotates when you put it in gear, both forward and reverse. There was just no propulsion. I thought I had lost the prop which is why I got towed in. It wasn't until we got to the dock that we discovered the shaft had shifted all the way out of the coupler on the transmission.

              I just thought it was a weird coincidence that we both had X-Stars and were both towed in at about the same time for very similar problems.

                took it in to Rambo marine. My nut on the coupler was all in place and yes you could move the prop by hand when shifted into forward or reverse. But its my understanding that with the engine not turning you have no hydraulic pressure to cause it to set itself into gear. I'm at a loss. They mentioned that there is a director valve that directs fluid as it is shifted into forward or reverse and that valve may be faulty. They said these transmissions are virtually bulletproof. That probably means I one of those lucky 1 in a million that fails...

                  Check to make surethe driveplate is intact. If the drive plate has failed it will not turn the transmission.
