  • Water Pump Leaking?? on 2002 X-star Help!!

I bought a 2002 X-star last month and it has ran like a dream until today...The compartment around the engine starting taking on a considerable amount of water. Upon further inspection I noticed that the water pump at the bottom of the motor (goes from the impeller to engine?) was leaking a steady stream of water. Ran my hand under the pump and it felt like there was possibly something missing, a drain plug maybe? Can anyone tell me what might the problem be? Is there a plug/screw that goes on the bottom of the water pump? Or maybe some type of seal gone bad? Help!! I want to try and get this fixed before this weekend...

I found the same leak and replaced the circulating pump last year. Not too difficult at all. I'm pretty sure the seals are shot once water is leaking from the weep hole. Here's a pic of mine and where the water was leaking from. Ordered it from SKIDIM.

goodelsha, thank you for your response. I just talked to my friend that inspected it and he said the leak is on the other water pump, the one with the impeller in it that gets the water in the engine. He said the leak was on the housing of it? We were wondering if there is plug/or screw that goes on the housing? Or maybe a seal gone bad?

Sorry.........thought you were talking about this when you said there was a hole under it....I know when I replace my impeller, it comes with a new gasket for the cover. Never noticed any plug or hole on the housing. Someone else with more knowledge should be able to help.

Hmmmm....I know the previous owner said they had the impeller replaced. I wonder if maybe the cover was not put back on correctly and fell off? Or possibly the gasket is bad? Do you by any chance know a link to a webiste or anything that shows a diagram of the impeller and its housing?

Check to make sure the cover plate is tight (four brass bolts in a brass pump body...be careful, easily stripped). If it's not that, make sure the hose clamps are tight. If it's not that, it's the bearing seal. Although you can buy a kit to replace the seal, IMHO you're better off just replacing the whole pump.

My friend and I just went back down to the marina and put the boat in the water to see if we could figure out what was up. bigmac I believe you are correct by suggesting the seals. It appears to be leaking around where the pump connects. Any suggestions on where to get the best deal on one of the pumps?

Fraz, www.skidim.com is a good place to get engine parts like this. Or your local dealer or marine parts store. the pump in the pic by goodelsha is the circulating pump and the other pump is called the raw water pump. The raw water pump has the rubber impeller inside of it. I suggest trying to look at your pump closer with a mirror or something to determine if there is a drain plug missing before replacing it. Older ones like mine do not have a drain plug. Yours may. Good luck.

If you google the pump model, Johnson F6B-9, you'll find them all over. IMHO, SkiDIM is the best combination of customer service, reliability, and price for these kind of parts.

bigmac I believe you hit the nail on the head...We ended up taking the water pump off to see what the problem was. In the process of removing it we discovered that one of the metal rings inside the water pump was cracked, thus causing it to leak. After talking to the nearest Mastercraft dealership we decided it would be cheaper to buy a whole new pump as opposed to do a rebuild. (About $250 for a new one) They had the pump shipped to me in 2 days and it took about an hour to get the new one put on. No leaks or problems since.

I have a 2000 Xstar ... I took in because I felt like boat was taking on more water than it should. Short boat ride and i'd have a ton of water come out of bilge when I turn it on. So, shop says circulation pump is dead and it's an expensive part $800???? Does that sound right for a 2000 MS X-Star? any help appreciated.

                        What engine?

What I see is about $100 for a new SB 350 engine. $700 mark-up seems like a lot for an engine component but I may be wrong. Then there is labor...

It it is the predator engine you are looking at $100 for the part and about an hour labor if you have a decent set of sockets. I did a write up on this about a month ago.

prolly the seal behind impeller - should always be inspected...

or you could have major problems -
