  • New Engine Resources

So, my LTR has a loss of compression in cyl 5. We are going to do teardown to determine WHAT the actual cause is. There is a lot of things to consider and with over 1000hrs, a rebuild at a minimum is a topic on the table. But the topic of a New or ReMan engine has come up as well. The concern is that with the high hours(I know not really) that in discovery of the current heads and block, there may be a surface that is to far out of tolerance to be rebuilt. It's unlikely, but has to be in the consideration. Secondly, there is the concern of warranty of the work. If something goes wrong with less than 100hours, what is my re-course???

In my current situation, I was already planning to keep the boat at least another 3 years, then reassess my situation. So some work will be done now, especially with the cost of current late model boats.

As part of due diligence, what are some good resources for NEW and ReMan engines? Additionally, Turn-Key solutions.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

I wouldn't assume the worst in the situation until the cylinder head is removed and inspected, it could something as simple as a bad head gasket or just needs a valve spring, or burnt valve. i don't think you will find a "new" engine unless you go GM and then its going to be a crate engine and then it won't be "marine", I hear jasper does a good job at reman engines. You could find a local engine speed shop and have the engine assemble inspected and rebuilt there if necessary. If you do find an Indmar on the shelf somewhere it's going to cost you your first born and an arm and a leg, just sayin... just my

I totally agree with and appreciate your comments. The teardown will reveal the actual problem. Just trying to get a leg up with some initial research before getting into the actual work.

I am actually looking forward to the teardown. I have a friend that has been rebuilding engines for years and is going to teach me a ton about all those little parts that I have read about over the years. I hate the situation, but love the fact that this will be a HUGE learning experience that I can use for years to come.

a leakdown test will help you in diagnosis, it will tell where the air is escaping, here is a good article on doing this test. http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...r/viewall.html

Should you need to go the replacement engine route, Jasper engines are top notch. I was a sales rep for them and had an engine built for my F150. I sold the truck with 240,000 miles on the engine and it was still going strong. Their facility is very impressive and I wouldn't hesitate to put a Jasper marine engine in my boat. Not the cheapest option, but you won't find a better option.

Hopefully you will get some good news after the tear-down. Good luck.
