1992 transmission eventually goes into gear

Hi all,

I have searched the past posts and I can't find this exact problem. I have a 1992 Maristar 1:1 velvet drive. It goes into reverse fine, but when I click it into forward, I can see that shaft spinning slowly but I have to give it some gas to go fully into forward. After going back to neutral, I can let it sit at 1000rpm and it will eventually go into forward. There is no grinding. These are the things I have done

Made sure fluid levels were correct
Changed the fluid about 5 times
Adjusted the shifter cable to ensure that it engages
Manual engagement of the transmission

when changing the fluid, there is a thick paste that sticks to the vacuum tube.

With all that, is there another adjustment, or does this mean a new tranny?

thick paste - have a picture? sounds like pump going or something blocking pressure build up.

I tried to get some of the black stuff out, but I couldn't get enough to get a good picture. To better describe, it is a black oil that coats the tube that I use to suck out the old transmission fluid. I noticed it when I wiped the tube off. It is not a a lot, but it is in there. The transmission fluid that I flushed with also comes out somewhat black

I took the attached pictures from the original transmission fluid. I stored it in a mason jar to see if I could get the particles to settle out. It didn't settle much, but you can see black particles suspended in the fluid

I am betting the filter is clogged with that stuff - and preventing pressure to build up to shift into gear propoerly.

Is there a way to clean it? Some additive that I can run through it?

or does this require some sort of rebuild. I would assume that the clog would be some sort of friction plate wear?

I would like to go ahead and take the tranny apart. Does anyone know a good mechanic in NE TENNESSEE? Does Mastercraft rebuild them? I am not far from Louden TN

You can also ship it out to a place (have to find it) and they will do a timely turnaround.

If you are any mechanically inclined, there are several extensive write-ups here as well as service manuals with detail for rebuild.

wish there was more to offer... 1992 it just may be time for a rebuild... I have seen some new transmissions for a little bit more than a rebuild kit. https://www.perfprotech.com/transmis...product/260397

unless I am looking at wrong rebuild kit - I believe they are 900ish bucks..
