  • LTR 330 won't start

2002 mastercraft prostar 190 with ltr 330 won't start. Had it out all last summer with no issues, and took it to a local boat shop last fall to get it winterized. I pulled it out of the shed about 3 months ago, but didn't get it out on the lake until the week before Memorial Day. I tried to start it and it cranks fine but doesn't fire. Had a full tank of gas and the battery is fully charged, and the safety lanyard is hooked up. I checked as many sensor connections and everything seem fined. I called the boat shop and they said bring it in. After two weeks sitting there at the shop they finally looked at my boat. They "were pretty sure" my mefi 4 was fried, and wanted $2500 to install a new one. I went and picked up the boat and pulled and sent the ecm to mefiburn, and they got right back to me letting me know that the ecm is just fine. I got the ecm back in the mail and have it installed again. Anybody have any ideas on what to try/check? Most of my research has shown that the crank sensor, a relay or the coil packs are the likely culprits. I don't have diacom to hook up to read any of sensors. Here in Omaha we don't have many boat shops to choose from, and I don't want to take it back to the original shop as they obviously don't have a clue.

Did they check the fuel pump?

I would have thought they checked the fuel pump but I guess you never know. When quizzing them they claimed that they couldn't connect to the ecm. I vaguely remember them saying something about no spark or fuel.

At key on you should hear the pump prime for 10 seconds. If not check the 3 fuses below. There are 3 mounted on the same cover as the ECM at least on mine. To check the fuse you have to remove it from the holder. If the fuses are good and you hear the pump prime check for fuel pressure. If its good have someone crank the engine while you wiggle the connectors on the crank position sensors. Mine had bad connections and just tweaked the female connectors to make better connections and she started right up. Hope this helps.

The metal cover over the ecm doesn't have any fuses, but I will poke around there after work today and try and find some fuses. Thanks for the help

Do you happen to have pictures of the crankshaft sensors? Or tell me where I should look?

Front of the engine, they read the reluctor ring immediately behind the harmonic balancer aka crank pulley.

They are going to basically be right under the coils packs on the front crank pulley. If they are bad, you won't get spark and it shouldn't fire injectors either as it won't be able to properly phase everything. Make sure both plugs are plugged in. On the off chance they disconnected them they could have put them back in backwards. If they did this the motor won't run. Oddly enough on mine the longer plug goes to the nearest sensor. So it is easy to reverse them or bend a pin if you disconnected them.

Just a bit of advice. You seem like a decent DIY guy, and it's pretty ironic that you got your boat winterized by someone else and now it's not working.

Do it yourself this fall, its really easy!!!

I have done almost everything since I bought he boat two years ago, other than winterizing it. I am scared I'll miss something, and it is nice being able to pull the boat out in the spring knowing it's ready to go...or should be at least. The local boat shop seems to be more of a dealer rather than a service station.

I found 15 amp fuses in a plug above the ecm, are these the correct ones? All are okay, and I checked the 2 sensors to make sure they're plugged in. Are these the crank position sensors? I did find 3 relays as well, any way to check those?

Took some pics on my phone, gotta figure out how to attach them.

Tons of information in the Winterization section on here. It's very easy to do and requires very basic tools to complete. It will take you a third of the time on your second go around.

I was nervous too on my first time a couple of years ago but everything turned out fine, and I'm confident that with you using the info on this forum you will not miss anything either.

Does the fuel pump prime for 2 seconds when you turn the key to ''On'' ?
