  • Help! Xstar won’t start!

Any ideas folks? Stopped for lunch and boat won’t start. Good voltage. In neutral. Both screens work, tabs, stereo, etc.

    TIA,

    Chris

Are you able to crank it? If not I’d think it’s the starter. If you can crank it but it’s not firing, it could be lots of things.

Doesn’t crank. Solenoid doesn’t even click.

It’s in. I thought about pulling panel to try bypassing it.

Happened to us today on our 18 Star. My husband hit the center button on the throttle and but it in gear to the motor but still remain in neutral. Clicked it back into neutral and started right up.

How many hours do you have on your actuators (surf tabs)? If over 100 hrs, you may have water in your harness that runs to your electronics in the engine compartment. This is a known problem. My dealer told us to plan on changing out the actuators and harnesses every 100 hours until Lenco improves the design. Have had this same issue on the last two boats, (2017 xt21, 2019 XStar).

I miss read... another post.. all those things will work with a battery that won't turn it over.. put a volt meter across the posts.. what is the voltage?

my bet is a dead battery.. probably dropped a cell. if it shows 12v take it out and have it load tested.. start with the easy stuff first...

Start by checking for the neutral position switch on the transmission.

The purpose of this is to prevent the engine from cranking when in gear (so you can't for say accidentally start the engine when your kid put the throttle forwards and people are swimming)

Because this part causes that problem (purposefully) it is an easy spot to start - it can be bypassed easily by putting both wires on one screw terminal.

If that doesn't do it work down the line - get a voltmeter and see if power is getting to solenoid or not.

Dealer came today. They brought batteries just in case. Didn’t solve the problem. Verified neutral switch is ok. Also checked kill switch. That’s fine too.

It appears that the signal isn’t getting from start/stop button to the starter solenoid. No faults though on PDM or EPDM diagnostics pages. Tech is thinking a starter relay or EPDM. I’m wondering if there is a true start relay or if it’s a virtual breaker in the EPDM. Tech plans to call MC Tech line and Ilmor in the morning. Hopefully they’ll have some things to try.

Before I bought the boat I had the dealer do a bulletin to the tab actuators. IIRC, it was a wiring mod rather than new actuators? Boat has 125 hrs. Only 16 hours since the mod. Which wiring could be damaged as a result of the actuators and wiring? For what it’s worth bilge was dry when this all started.

Appreciate the responses. Hoping this gets wrapped up in a couple days. Currently vacationing with friends and family and not having a boat while at the lake is not how I wanted to spend my week. Very sad faces around here!

I don't know but is the push button start factory? if so then you are probably on the right track if not others have had issues with them...

                        Hi Curver,

Push to start is standard. No response from dealer, MC, or Ilmor today.

Crossing my fingers. Want to get running ASAP.
