87 pro star - Need Help Finding a Fuel Water Separator

I think your filter unit is mounted on part of the floor joist (no stringers) opposite the fuel pump. What a pain to access and change. I couldn't take it any more. I moved the entire setup to the rear of the boat adjacent to the fuel cell. Much better all around.
Or replace the unit you have in the same place.

Look here for a complete replacement kit that I have used multiple times.

While you're there replace the fuel line from the cell to the fuel pump. No better time like the present, especially if those lines are OEM from 1987.

If you want to make the move to the rear of the boat (you may not have the extra room in the fuel cell compartment) there is no need to remove the fuel cell. Remove the hold-down brackets and screws, loosen the hose clamps on one end of the fuel filler hose, and rotate the cell out onto the floor about the axis of the filler hose...saving a big pain of removing and reinstalling the hardened filler hose. If you ever want to remove the filler hose, cut it off and replace with a new one. That will save you a lot of cursing and painful frustration.

While you are there with the fuel cell rotated out from under the transom area, consider replacing the fuel sending unit with an upgraded model. No better time than now.

Hey waterlogged! Thanks for all the good tips. Last year I actually took the cell out, cleaned it out, new sending unit, all new lines. The PO must have removed the separator because there isn’t one anywhere to be found. Just an inline filter so I rolled with that setup. I had some issues last summer during vacation (even with a brand new tuned carb and all new everything). I narrowed it down to either water contamination or a heat soak problem. So I’m just going to try to tackle all of it this spring before I take it out again

My 87 pro star has no fuel water separator and I need to figure out which aftermarket one will work? A lot of the ones I’m seeing online just say “outboard” and I’m concerned theyre either too small or won’t flow enough fuel. Just curious if anyone here has replaced the whole unit and which one they went with? Thanks for any help.
