Or replace the unit you have in the same place.
Look here for a complete replacement kit that I have used multiple times.
While you're there replace the fuel line from the cell to the fuel pump. No better time like the present, especially if those lines are OEM from 1987.
If you want to make the move to the rear of the boat (you may not have the extra room in the fuel cell compartment) there is no need to remove the fuel cell. Remove the hold-down brackets and screws, loosen the hose clamps on one end of the fuel filler hose, and rotate the cell out onto the floor about the axis of the filler hose...saving a big pain of removing and reinstalling the hardened filler hose. If you ever want to remove the filler hose, cut it off and replace with a new one. That will save you a lot of cursing and painful frustration.
While you are there with the fuel cell rotated out from under the transom area, consider replacing the fuel sending unit with an upgraded model. No better time than now.
