Also important. You don't want the inside or outside of your vehicle to look like a New York Taxi.

      • I got my boat started!!

The longer story- bought an 88 Prostar - has freshwater cooling and the Powerslot transmission. Pretty good condition- rear seat foam and material are pretty rough but everything else was good. Brought it home about three weeks ago and didn't really have much time to work on it. I've been doing small things here and there. Had the rear seal on the transmission replaced on Friday. I rigged up my own version of a raw water intake system (but having seen the one with the flow valve, I may upgrade). Engine turned over for a bit- took 3-4 tries to get it to catch, but it finally started!!

Idles very smoothly, responds well to throttle and sounds great!! This is my first boat, so I might be gushing a bit here, but I am thrilled I bought this. Previous owner has been very helpful with answering questions and giving me pointers. Included a bunch of stuff with it- wakeboard pole, a tube, ski rope, a couple of life jackets. Nothing but a positive experience so far! Hope to have it on the water shortly.

If there's anyone in my area (Petaluma, CA) who knows these boats and is willing to help me on with some of the things I don't know how to do (shaft packing, electrical), I'd sure appreciate the assistance.

        • Welcome to the family Greg. Glad you got it running. That's much better than just sitting in it and making engine sounds. You will find a ton of useful info on here. Read up on driving your boat. They handle kind of strange when backing (turn towards the right), and it takes a little learning and practice to master everything. Hopefully you will connect with someone local to help you learn the ropes. Most importantly...........we all love pictures so don't be shy.

            Greg-
Would love to see pictures of it when you get them. I'm not an expert but will offer any assistance if I can. Feel free to come up to Shasta or Whiskeytown and join us some time. We should still have about a month of boating left at least.

            • Just got done oiling the teak. Only took about 5 min, but I did have to use a flashlight to see since it's 10:30pm. I wanted it to be dry for Wednesday morning since I have the day off and the wind forecast is favorable.

              • home made skid plates

JJ, let me know how those work - I have some UHMW available.

Now that I see the picture, looks like a rust bucket trailer. Maybe its time for some new bunk rugs too.

                    • Greg, welcome to the Prostar family! I have an 89 (also my first boat) and I think you will love it (we do)! As the others have said, pics are great. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions. I will try to help as best I can. Most of the work I have done on my boat has been electrical or related to the gauges, so that is what I am most familiar with. And this forum is excellent, tons of experience and knowledge. Bunch of great people around here.

                      • I too have a new-to-me 89 ProStar, my first inboard - its been great this summer. I've done some work to the boat and trailer, mostly preventative stuff, hope to post a summary w/ pics soon.
I added UHMW pads to my trailer. Considered rollers, tried a couple of mock-up rollers but the UHMW 12"x12"x1" from Grainer cost $35 and provided me with several pads. Still on the first set, my asphalt drive is very rough and does eat away some of the material each time but looks like they would last a season. Pictures coming....

                        • I'll see if I can take a few pictures tonight. The boat's in a bit of a disassembled state- rear seat and engine cover are out, and it hasn't been polished or waxed yet, but I think it still looks great.

                            • I installed my new starboard 3" SS exhaust flange today.

It needed a little dremel work to get the holes to line up, 5 of 8 were right on, 2 needed a smidge and 1 a bit more egging to get in. Variances in manufacturing tolerance on the flange and boat could be in play.

Shame MC does not sell this part any longer. A $9 fix is over $100 in a heart beat for pre 94 boats. It only gets more complicated trying to make some other marine 3" flange work.

Waiting on sealant to cure overnight before installing new 3' / 3" marine hose to finish job.

                              • Last night worked till 1AM getting everything put back together and cleaned up so I could ski this morning. I woke up this morning to 18mph winds. While I had a great time working on the boat last night, it sure was a bummer to have the day off and not get to ski. Same thing happened a few weeks ago when I had a week day off. I've got the worst luck.
