Drive shaft log leaking help!!

Hi guys my 87 prostar 190 has a bad leak where the drive shaft log penetrates the hull. Any ideas on how to repair? Has anyone run in to this problem before?

Well, the normal path for water into the boat there is through the packing around the driveshaft, inside the big-ole brass nut just below and out of your picture. That's a normal maintenance item and easily adjusted. Are you sure the water isn't coming in there?

If it's actually coming through some kind of break in the fiberglass, I can't help you. You'll probably have to get someone knowledgeable to decide if the crack is a structural problem, or something simple that a patch of fiberglass and a spot of resin will take care of.

So, I guess, the first problem is finding exactly where the water is coming in.

+1 on Frank's comment.... a video or more specifics where the water is coming in. If it's a bad shaft log it can be replaced. It could be as simple as needing new shaft packing... where is the water intrusion originating? - some water is normal... a few drips per every 10 seconds ok. or you can get a dripless packing.

The water is coming in through the fiberglass. I'm very familiar with replacing shaft packing but unfortunately that's not the issue on this one. The boat is at creative fiberglass now (a local shop) and will be ready next week. I'm not a fiberglass guy and figured I would leave it to a skilled hand because we are looking to start skiing in the next couple weeks. I will post pics of the repair when I get it back. Looks identical to my '89. In my case the solution was to remove all the glass on top of the shaft log, reattach the log to the hull with epoxy and glass over the whole assembly. Took 4 -6 hours and it's been working great for several years.

The repair is gonna hit me for 250.00 and that was a big deciding factor for me because I'm currently out of epoxy resin and mat so I would've had a good bit in materials if I bought the west system stuff because they are very proud of it u know. So he says I should have the boat back next week and I will post the repair pics.kinda wish he would send me some progress pics.

Not at all. And I've seen his work. There is a guy on a local lake we ski on that hit a log and ripped his rudder off leaving a huge hole in his hull. This guy repaired it and did a really nice job for 600.00 so I'm optimistic about it.

My '89 is doing the same thing, I bought the West Systems materials this summer but never got around to fixing it.

I should replace my shaft log, it's been there since new and while I'm at it might pull the shaft and replace cutlass bearing too.

You may not have to replace the shaft log (it's not a part that wears) Dropping the shaft and replacing the cutlass bearings is a good idea. The shaft may get in the way of this repair anyhow. Especially if you have the Powerslot transmission.

Ok so my OCD was getting to me and I picked the boat up at the fiberglass shop yesterday. After all I've done to the boats I've restored it made no sense to let somebody else make this repair. I got started on it today and will post pics of my progress. I got the log cut out and all old fiberglass removed. I cleaned the surrounding area really well and have the log epoxied back in. I will lay the fiberglass mat tomorrow. All is going well!!
