  • $1M Question . . .

    Need some advice TT.

Long story short, two months ago my wife was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer.
She was started on chemo right away, then will go to surgery, and lastly radiation.
As you might imagine this has turned our lives upside down and its looking like the next couple of years are going to be a journey.
Needless to say water time is on the back burner and we will most likely not use our boat for that duration, maybe longer.

We have a 2010 X45, with a new ly6 long block as of last spring (100 hrs on it) & GSA.
We have put a lot into it and its strong & totally dialed so I would hate to let it go.

But it kills me for it to just sit in storage while I am making payments.
On top of that, I have been told that you turnover expensive boats prior to the 10 year mark because it is very difficult for buyers to finance boats of that age.

Am I better off selling the boat now that its early season, then pick up a new to me boat in a couple years as things normalize
    OR
should I bite the bullet and hang onto it?

Thanks in advance for the feedback and advice.

Very sorry to hear about your wife, and best wishes for her health and a full recovery. Cancer sucks, and there's really no other way to say it.

Personally, I'd keep the boat unless you need the money as it may be harder to buy a new one down the road, both financially and emotionally.

However, if you're asking a pure financial question regardless of whether or not you have a boat in the future, then yes.... I would sell the boat if I were still making payments on it and I could not use it for a year.

I'd sell the boat and focus on my wife if it were me Wishing you all the best with her fight, but it sounds like she can beat it. So sorry to hear it.

Very sorry to hear about your situation. I honestly do not know what I would do. My only thought would be if you use the boat at all for just a lazy day fun, or evening out, and would it be good for her to get out during all the bad times? Nothing like a therapeutic day or night on the water...
If its not a competition ski boat, its always second best.

Sorry to hear about your wife, but it sounds like you're on a strong path to a cure.

I agree with Double D. You never know when you might want to spend a day floating around, and a day on the water can be very restful and therapeutic. Plus, my concern would be if you sell, by the time you're ready to buy, prices will be higher, and you may have to invest more money to get the replacement boat dialed in to your liking. Sounds like your existing boat is dialed in for your needs- keep it and commit to making more memories together as part of her recovery plan.

Sorry to hear man. Just watched my best friends mom kick the crap out of breast cancer, and I can tell you, getting her out on the boat or their jet skis was an excellent release through all the craziness.

Best of luck to your wife! I would keep it for sure, getting her mind if things could be the best thing for her.

I wish your wife a FAST recovery.

You are making payments on the boat, get rid of the damn boat.

So sorry to hear. The only thing I would respectfully suggest you consider is can the boat be used to give your wife some sense of normalcy/peace/release in any way during these difficult times? My wife, for example (I think) would find comfort in our boat. She rivals my love (if not surpasses it) for boat days.

Very sorry about your wife's diagnosis.

I'm in agreement with Double D, gweaver, pmikler, and MC25. Hang on to the boat, and take her out when she is able. Being on the water is therapeutic. Well, at least for me it is. It's the happy place all of us go to escape the reality of life's battles, only if it's just for a little while. One question, though...How does she feel about it?

Prayers to you and your wife. Ask her what she thinks about keeping the boat as it may provide a nice pick me up just going out for a cruise and getting her out of the house.

My bride is an 11 year cancer survivor and while we didn’t have our boat then she enjoyed cruising around together in my TA with the T-Tops out despite the loss of her hair from the chemo.

Stay strong together and have faith that she will beat this.

If financially keeping the boat is feasible, I say keep it around .... these boats have brought so many wonderful people and memories to my life, I would hate to not have that be a possibility for baseball both of you.

I wish you both the best .... hang in there.
