Closed cooling question?

Help? Our 2001 X-Star has a closed cooling system. My question is, now that I have de-winterized it, can I fire this up on the trailer to make sure every is working properly. With my old raw water cooled prostar I used to have use a hose to connect the inlet so as not to cook the impeller. Do I need to do anything like this with a closed cooling system, or I can I just run the boat for a while on the trailer as it is. Just want to check the battery is charging through the alternator and that no water has got into the fuel tank, before heading up to the lake.

Even with a closed system, the cooling is done with a heat exchanger using lake water. If you run it too long without water going through the exchanger, it might overheat...I think. Probably best to play it safe and connect it to a raw water source. Then you'll have no question.

The raw water side of the closed cooling system is just like a raw water cooled engine. Water gets pulled in from the lake with the same raw water (impeller) pump. But instead of pumping the raw water through the engine block it pumps it through the raw water side of the heat exchanger. Whether you have raw water cooling or fresh water cooling, the impeller pump needs raw water at all times or it will be damaged.

Just wanted to say thanks - just ran the boat in the water and all was fine. Then - it looks like a seal on the gearbox has failed over the winter and dumped the transmission fluid all over the bilge - now I can't get a gear. NIGHTMARE!

Is it the seal at the rear of the transmission or the seal between the motor and the transmission?

The reason that I ask is that I just finished replacing my rear seal on the transmission so I might be able to at least guide you...

Ummmm - not sure, I 'll have a closer look. Did you do the job yourself and was it simple enough for a non-expert, or is it something better done by the dealer?
