  • 2017 NXT22 Winterization Checklist

Winterized the 2017 NXT22 a few weeks ago and created this in the process since it was my first time on this boat and slightly different than the 2006 X2. Figured I'd post it in case it could help anyone out or for suggestions from anyone on anything I missed or should be doing differently.

    1. Check trailer tire air pressure
    2. Check lug nut torque
    3. Check trailer brake fluid
    4. Fill gas tank with non-ethanol Rec 90 fuel from Marathon
    5. Add fuel stabilizer
    6. Disconnect intake hose after strainer
    7. Remove strainer and basket and clean
    8. Fill strainer with antifreeze and reinstall
    9. Route engine oil drain line out back drain plug
    10. Attach clear hose to intake hose and run engine up to temperature using garden hose and 5 gallon bucket
    a. While engine is running
    b. Remove ballast bags and ensure they are empty
    c. Winterize ballast system
    11. Shut off engine
    12. Drain oil out engine oil drain line
    13. Open oil fill port
    14. Crack loose oil filter
    15. Finish draining oil through drain line
    16. Remove filter and reinstall new – MAKE SURE IT’S TIGHT
    17. Fill with 5 quarts of Pennzoil 5W-30 Platinum Full Synthetic
    18. Remove drain plug on each side of engine block – 2 total
    19. Remove drain plug from trans cooler – long cylinder on starboard side
    20. Pull hose off of manifold on each side – 90 degree fitting
    21. Pull both heater hoses off
    22. Use 40 psi compressed air to blow out heater hoses
    23. Reinstall all drain plugs and hoses
    24. Clamp dripless shaft water line closed
    25. Fill bucket with 8 gallons of antifreeze and insert clear hose
    26. Start engine and run till pink comes out the back
    27. Remove impeller, lube with Vaseline and store in baggie for spare
    28. Painters tape over gas vent
    29. Pull battery and bring in house
    30. Bring all removable seat cushions to basement

If your boat has the sealed shaft system, the hose will come off of the water feed somewhere on the raw water side prior to going into the engine for circulation (cold water). There is a small clear hose that would be spliced (with a coupling) into a primary water line feed and that hose would go back to the sealed shaft attachment. Clamp it off near the splice (or tee) so that your antifreeze does not run out the sealed component on the underside of the boat. You can clamp it or build a cap to attach to the tee fitting (my preference).

Black N Green, your boat will have it. Look above the impeller housing. It is a small hose that will go down to the shaft. You have to do this or a lot of the anti-freeze will exit there instead of running through the engine. You could remove the hose from the T and cap the T.

I wish there were drain plugs for the manifolds instead of removing the hoses. #20.
          Question, I don't have a heater, so, do I do #21?

Notice the size of sockets needed. Also need some pliers that are not abrasive for the exhaust hose. It will be almost melted on.
              5/16 for hose clamps
              7/16 for transmission cooler
              9/16 for engine block
Some pictures to help find where everything is.
I didn't remove my impeller because I only have 38 hours. At least it looks like it will be easy.

I had the MC dealer winterize the boat as I didn’t have time this fall (moved). That said I’d like some clarity on 10b - winterize the NXT ballast system.

I get we need to pull the bags and drain the tanks but (as these have Tsunami pumps) I believe there are check valves on the fill lines meaning those lines must retain fresh water. If so then it seems to me that the fill lines need to be drained or anti freeze must be sucked up into/through the line. From a quick look it doesn’t look easy to disconnect the fill lines at the check valve as MC used compression bands and not hose clamps. The drain lines flow freely into the tanks and I do know you can add antifreeze to the tank from the hull fittings. In looking at the hard tank fill pump I’m pretty sure you can see the check valve just above the pump.

So what are y’all doing to properly address a winterization of the NXT system? Am I off base about the fill lines or check valves?

Dealer says let it run out the shaft

I found the hose running to the prop shaft and pinched it with a pair of vice grips. I contacted the dealer, he said to just let it run out. All that this step is doing is flushing the exhaust adapters, heat transfer cylinder, and the hoses. I preferred to keep the antifreeze in the system until March when we put her back in the water.

KennyK69, I did not do anything other than remove the bags but I really only removed them to do all of the other work.
I will look tomorrow but I think you could probably put a gallon or so in each tank through one of the hoses with a funnel and then run each pump in and out to make sure that the anti-freeze gets in the hoses. I am in TX so it hs not a major threat with my boat inside.

I just followed the procedure in the manual for winterizing the ballast. Sorry for not putting that in the checklist.

Hi everyone - This year was my first year with an inboard - 2018 NXT22. We had a great time and love the boat. I sure appreciate this winterization checklist but have a couple of questions. I ran 5 gallons of antifreeze through the system by joining a hose to the water pump hose then drained the system. However, I doubt the thermostat was open and wonder if I need to separately address it. Secondly, I tried to drain the oil by running the oil pan hose out of the transom after warming the boat up. However, I could never really get the oil to flow. I checked for stuff like kinks in the hose. I was able to suck through the hose and got about a quart out but could never get it to fully drain. I did have the oil fill cap off. Any ideas?

                            Thanks
