I'm getting set up to rebuild my trailer in a few weeks and have a couple of questions. I know it looks in rough shape, but I ran the numbers and I can rebuild it way cheaper than buying a new one. It's the original trailer for a 1989 Maristar 240. I'm very mechanical but have never rebuilt a trailer, so bear with the dumb questions.
1. The bunks appear to have quite a curve in them that mates up to the hull of the boat, especially on the forward-most bunks. Do I just tie a ratchet strap onto the new one's and pull it down into that curve? The picture isn't a good representation, the curve is a good 4" between the front and second brackets which are only 4' apart. A 4" bend in 4' of 2x6 seems to be a lot. I did a search and didn't really find anything like my situation, everyone else's bunks appeared fairly straight. They are 12' 2x6's, two on the outside and two on the inside. The outside ones are furthest to the stern and are much straighter. Am I worrying about nothing?
2. Is there a standard size spindle for these trailers or do I have to pull a hub off? I am leery about taking anything apart on this beast for fear it will disintegrate in my hands before I'm ready to rebuild it. 1-1/16 spindles with L68149 and L44649 bearings appear to be a very common size. I may just order hub/drum assemblies for that size and take a chance. I guess I'm just looking for how much of a shot I've got, just 50/50 or better than 80%?
3. I'm missing one guide post. Anyone know where I can get these or should I just have a fab shop bend up two new ones using the one I have as a template? Also, the existing one has a pvc sleeve over it with two steel collars with set screws to hold it in place. If I build new ones can I just slide new padded guide post covers over the steel or should I have this roller sleeve?
Thanks in advance for all the help, you guys have been a lifesaver. As I mentioned in previous posts I my wife was on two ski teams when we met but career and family have kept her off the water until this year. Now when I look in that mirror I see a smile on her face I haven't seen in quite a while.
