  • 2 ACME props - test results

Some of you may remember that I put up a post saying I wasn't totally happy with my new ACME 541. My old OJ actually seemed to perform better. I had several long talks with Bill at ACME and ended up exchanging the prop for a 475 (which is the 13 x 12 5/8).

I got the new prop today, and I just took it out for a spin (even though it's raining). I'm happy with the new prop.

Here are the results of my tests:
    '94 Prostar with LT-1

    Original OJ Legend -
    3000 rpm - 32.2 mph
    34 mph - 3200 rpm
    36 mph - 3400 rpm
    WOT - 4700 rpm - 46.4 mph

    ACME 541 -
    3000 rpm - 31.3 mph
    34 mph - 3350 rpm
    36 mph - 3500 rpm
    WOT - 4700 rpm - 46.1 mph

    ACME 475 -
    3000 rpm - 33 mph
    34 mph - 3100 rpm
    36 mph - 3250 rpm
    WOT - 4625 rpm - 47.2 mph

The new ACME brought me a little lower than I should be for WOT, but the speed went up. I'm happy with the rpm at skiing speed. These days, anything that gets a bit more gas mileage is fine by me. The differences are subtle, but the 475 seems to be the best match for my boat.

With the LT-1, all three props give me an unbelieveable hole shot. I don't have a good way to measure that, but all of them can yank my arms out of thier sockets.

I do wish I had a way to compare to the new OJ XMP props.

Eric Johnson posted today that he would be happy to send anyone interested an XMP to try (I'm paraphrasing). I'm giving mine a test run this weekend if all goes to plan. Send him a PM.

      The thread is here

        Doug;

What all are you going to do in you tests? I'm wanting to compare my stock prop to the new Acme. I wish the GPS devices had a way to output speed and time.

Speed will be calibrated with a course with magnets and confirmed with GPS. This is what Brian M and I have discussed as criteria.

            1. RPM/Speed at WOT.
            2. Wake shape and rooster tail (pictures) at 36, 34, 30, 26.
            3. Wake turbulance (pictures)
            4. Hole shot: Driver/Passenger perspective versus skier's perspective aka dismemberment factor.
            5. Zero to 30 (timed with a stopwatch).
            6. Zero to 36. (same)
            7. Vibration at various speeds (just one of those things you've got to give to one or the other, neither or both.
            8. Maintaining speed (holding in the course).
            9. How it feels to ski it (softer, firmer, forgiving or not).
            10. RPM Baselines at 36, 34, 30, 26

We got rained out on Sunday and spent Saturday messing with the course. I apologize for the further delay.

Hope it is not inappropriate to revive a ten year old thread. What prop are you using now? I don't really care about hole shot or top speed, but flattest wake... Thanks
