Sorry to see that. I'll start my stopwatch for you on your cam phasers......

BTW, I didn't start this thread for the winter-time blues, but to pass along useful information for those in the market for a truck. I know that when I'm getting ready to get a new vehicle for me, I research the crap out of them to avoid problems like this. My company always buys new....yet here we are.

....and I guess to stir the pot a little, I asked our local mechanic that works on our trucks if he were buying trucks for a business, what would he get. He said, Toyota. We get a new truck each year in our fleet......I have a decision to make.

There is something to be said for the fact that Toyota is still running a 10 year old platform. It works. Period. My 0.02... with my 4th Toyota Tundra in the driveway.

I have to say after being a long time GM guy after owning my Tundra I will probably always buy a Tundra.

Fords may be much better than before. But when you’ve been burned several times. Hard to go back. Just sayin

The Cam phaser issue is known for Fords ... but keep in mind they sell so many ... so I am not sure I will predict doom.

Stay up to date on the oil changes, use the Motorcraft filter and semi-synthetic or full synth ... I bet you will be fine ... I have owned several Fords and not had the issue (all the way to 210K miles)

            5.0 L, 5.4 L, 3.5 Beast .... stay optimistic.

A leak down test can help determine where compression is being lost at. Excess blow-by into the crank case normally means a failure in the piston, piston rings or lands.

It's not my personal vehicle, but another of our company F150's. Been using ford since 1995 when the company started.....but this rash of problems is out of control. Our mechanic we use showed me the plug from Cyl#2. Looks like tar on the plug. Compression is bad.

If the only thing he is going off is no compression and a fouled spark plug you need a new mechanic.

                          ^What?
How do you figure? #2 cyl is fuqed and you're blaming the mechanic for the bad news or what?

Bad compression = surgery whether is rings or something else, so who cares.

No, not blaming mechanic, he is pretty reputable/trustworthy/honest. Blaming ford for their 5.0 POS. Nothing but problems with that engine. So we are switching brands.

I have worked with 2 companies in the last 15 years that run 120-200 work trucks (just in our small division of a large company)1/2 ton to 1 ton. The cost of running Chevy is way higher in overall maintenance and repair cost (with repairs higher) than running ford. I would say 3/5 were 1 ton trucks.

We ran a test on the Tundra for the 1/2 tons and after 6 months of fuel cost we quickly sold them to employees at a discounted rate. We were putting 4,000-6,000 miles a month on them. No issues other than fuel cost were out passing all cost on every other truck we have run.

I know my buddies Tundras are terrible on fuel. I'll have to run some numbers, but our mileage is close to what you say here. ....I know I'm not going Dodge. I guess run the Ecoboost engines and call it a day.....

Curious as to how many miles those companies put on a truck before they flip them for new ones? 150K? 200K?
