Seems like we have a lot of TT'ers that have either been, are going or are frequent visitors to Cancun so I figured I'd start a thread to keep our clutter out of the Tow Rig Photos (of all places).

Headed to Cancun in January. Been to Cancun/Playa area many times. Great destination with some awesome all-inclusives.

Cancun is a good time. We went to witness the end of the Mayan calendar.. 12/21/12. The “interesting “ people were out in force at the pyramid. We were Tver a couple days and floated over to Cozumel for a bit. Super fun trip!
I highly recommend Antigua though. Keyonna beach resort was fun place to spend Christmas a few years ago. We fast boated over to Barbuda for a day. Pink sand beach was deserted for miles.

Chichen Itza was absolutely unreal. Have to go see it. Cave swimming is also a must.

Do they still allow you to climb the pyramid to the "room" on the top? Do they let you inside the pyramid to see the idol inside, I think it was "Chac Mool". You have to climb narrow stairs that go up inside a tunnel.

Can’t climb it anymore which is a bummer. My parents have been to the other ruins and they were allowed to climb it.

Which brings me to my full opinion of the Mayans being run by aliens

We're going for the GF's birthday next week and while we would have preferred somewhere more exotic, we figured Mexico was a safe bet with the Covid restrictions or lack thereof. We already cancelled 3 trips in 2020 and didn't want to make it 4.

Anyone have any experience with Tulum, spending 4 days there before moving up to Cancun

We are heading to Iberostar Grand Paraiso in January for second time with the same couples. Super affordable long weekend with all inclusive including airfare on Delta from ATL. Can't wait!!

Tulum is awesome, get an early start as tourist will flock like grackles
Take 15 south out of Tulum if you want some really nice beaches, back in the day we would grab a Jeep the minute we landed at Cancun and head south for a couple weeks, moving almost daily from thatched hutch with hammocks as we explored dive sights, $5 a day included hammock, beer, fresh fish and fruits, unfortunately its not like that today

Stop by Akumal, half moon bay, say hi to the Loco Gringos for me,
if you want the best snorkel/dive spot without a boat take the road north from half moon till it ends, there you'll find a real gem with abundant sea life and caves, Cenote Y Laguna Yalku

                  enjoy, definitely envious

Thanks Mark, I'll pass along that info to the GF, she's a big diver. We rented a car but Hertz wanted some obscene price for a Jeep so I got a Volkswagen Jetta, not as much fun but should get the job done.

Our hotel in Tulum is small and has a private beach but if we do venture out to some others I'll look for the Loco Gringos!

I have been to Cancun 3x over the years… I stayed at the Krystal on the far north end, Beach Palace and Moon Palace. Last trip there was around 1999. Three trips there was two trips too many… I’ll never go back… I can stay home to be in a HUGE LOUD POLLUTED city. Cancun is exactly that. Plus, I hate all inclusive food and I can’t stress how much – so much so I go hungry because buffets make me want to puke… You could sprinkle AI food with bacon or chocolate syrup and I would still hate it. Cancun has over the last few years had cartel killings and violence spill over into the resort/tourist areas, so buyer beware.

                      1. I would NOT recommend the Moon Palace – the beach and water is FULL of seaweed constantly and the water is as murky as your local ski lake…

                      2. Beach Palace was not relaxing, and too spring breaky and WT for my blood… Another thing, the surf in the main hotel zone is very rough, and not enjoyable

                      3. Krystal hotel on the far north… They had it all, not a bad place to stay (back then, idk about now). But if you were looking for a hotel a little detatched from the city buzz and calm beautiful beaches, that north shore is where I’d direct you.

That being said, the ONLY place I would vacation in Mexico today is Cozumel. It’s safe, the restaurants are incredible and the islanders are the friendliest on earth. There is a reason I have been there almost 20x over the last 30 years and going back in June 2021.

I've only been to Cozumel on cruise stops, but echo your sentiments about the friendliness of the locals. The food is fantastic if you get out of the tourist zones.

As far as the hotel situation, we're staying at a boutique down in Tulum so hopefully the crowds won't be terrible. Finishing up the trip with a couple of days in the hotel zone in Cancun. Staying at the Ritz so hopefully no WT and we have a car if we need to go find a nicer beach.

I was hoping we would leave that alone. Out of sight, out of mind.

Yeah, I noticed that you were staying in Tulum, that could be totally different... if your gf is that big of a diver, a day trip to CZ might be warranted. I dive with a private DM i've been friends with for a long time but if I was going with a commercial op, Dive With Martin is awesome.

Just be careful re: the voilence:

Local authorities at Tulum, Mexico break the Coronavirus pandemic guidelines authorizing a music event and it tragically ends in a shooting.
