  • RPM Act and Aftermarket Industry

If you haven't heard, the EPA his moving forward with enforcement of a section of the Clean air act that says, "The Clean Air Act states quite clearly that it is prohibited “for any person to manufacture or sell, or offer to sell, or install, any part or component intended for use with, or as part of, any motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine, where a principal effect of the part or component is to bypass, defeat, or render inoperative any [emissions control] device.”" ANY vehicle that has a VIN number (car that was intended for the road) can no longer be modified by removing emissions equipment even if the vehicle is for off road use only (ie. racing, mudding, etc). This will kill the aftermarket industry that we all rely on for parts, innovations, etc. for anything we own that is powered by an engine.

The RPM act aims to remove this overreach by the EPA. "The RPM Act creates a loophole centered on the usage of a motor vehicle, which gives cover to anyone who manufacturers, sells, or installs a defeat device—the RPM act as written would create an exemption “if the action is for the purpose of modifying a motor vehicle into a vehicle that is not legal for operation on a street or highway and is to be used solely for competition.” "As with most tiny, obscure bills like this, the reason why the RPM Act keeps on being introduced year after year is money. The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) is the trade association for aftermarket equipment manufacturers, including the companies manufacturing defeat devices, and they have been fighting with EPA for the exemption for at least 5 years."

Here are some links to more information. I would strongly encourage everyone to write your legislators to ensure the RPM act gets introduced and passed.

The EPA has no authority to create ANY Laws. This baloney has gone on a long time. Like any govt entity their biggest mission is to make themselves bigger, and more important. What's next? Lawnmowers and model airplanes?

but this is where they get everyone these are not "laws" they are "regulations" made by unelected people who got the job because their brother in law is someone. it is BS and is already going on all over the place. I hope it does not kill the industry but they will do all they can to destroy all businesses except the few largest that give them the most money.

Semantics at this point. The EPA is raiding performance shops around the country and ruining lives of a ton of people.

I'm almost convinced that is the point. Look at what the govt. has done with this "pandemic". Govt really doesn't care about people, just money and power.

Here you go. Applies to RC vehicles. You in California had your chance to get rid of Newsom.

The state that continuously battles wildfires due to hippy dictated forest management pratices, now bans chainsaws. Yep. Sounds reasonable.

Kalifornia and reasonable in the same sentence? No Way! Kalirado is in the same boat. Kalifornians moved here to escape draconian B.S. then promptly made a great red state into a blue one just like the jacked up place they left. Same thing being done by the illegal aliens who try to make this Mexico. If you loved it so much, why did you leave it??
