To be honest, I didn't keep the surface wet when I did mine, I just did a small enough area (roughly 2' X 2') so that the compound didn't dry when using the polisher. I can see this being a issue because the pad does generate some heat when using a polisher.

I put just put the polisher on its lowest speed. The point is to get the wax on as quickly as possible. It's usually hot when I'm doing it so I want to get the waxing done as quickly as possibly. I then wipe off the excess with a couple of high performance cloths. One dirty for the first pass and one...

I use the rotary at low RPM's to apply the wax and then take it off by hand with a high performance cloth. Others could do something different. Not sure it matters what you use....
