strut bearing replacement

Excuse the noob question: How do I know if the strut bearing needs to be replaced? It's a 1989 TriStar, probably has the original bearing.

Mine was getting noisy, vibrating, and had too much play. I disconnected the coupler and it hung low and had slop. It would have been a reasonably easy repair, put i eventually discovered the shaft tube on my strut was out of round as well...had to replace the whole strut. Mine had 300 + hrs and is driven through A LOT of shallow sandy channels.....adding to the wear.
1999 sportstar 19, vortec TBI 310hp, acme 541 prop, 2006 prostar decals, alpine ida-x100m stereo, clarion speakers, kicker sub, and a JL XD600/6 amp.
stick of choice: 66" connelly concept. hey, im old school!

Get under the boat and see how much play you have. I have a 1995 pro star and maybe have 1/32 of play...I always make sure its clean and run a mix of simple green and vinegar thru it to make sure no mineral deposits build up - After it all dry's I spray 303 in there to keep the rubber from drying out.

The cost to replace is about $600.00 includes engine alignment
...A bad day water skiing still beats a good day at work...1995 Pro Star 205....

I think I remember reading in my owners manual a recommended replacement of that bushing every 300 hours. Seems a bit excessive since I run in fairly clean water, will probably just think about replacement once I get to six hundred hours or so. I don't think most folks bother with It and just run it until it breaks but by then the prop shaft is also worn ...
Need LT-1 parts?
OIL FILTER: Factory installed is a Penzoil P23, Afta market brands, AC Delco PF-454 and a Fram PH-13 or PH-30 will work.
SPARK PLUGS: AC Delco MR43LTS (gapped to .040")
FUEL FILTERS: AC Delco 25171391 (pump inlet side)
89058397 (pump outlet side)
IGNITION WIRES: Call Inboard Online @ (877) 327-7175 and order part numbers 556010A (odd bank) and 556010B (even bank)

Thanks for the replies, all good information. Today, while riding in the back of the boat, I noticed a growl that seemed to happen only while going over waves, only happened about ten percent of the time. I've never noticed it before because I usually drive the boat, don't ride in the back too much. Does this growl sound like the bearing?

Bushings not bearing my 86 had a lil growl too... replaced bushings and all is well. Don't pay to do it.. Read the articles above and get er done. Its not to hard at all. Your biggest issue will be pressing the old ones out if you don't have access to a press. Just swing by your local machine shop with a 6 pack If you don't go with the newer style bushings and use the brass style just throw them in the freezer for a hour or two and they will slide right in.

I bought a inside bearing puller set from harbor freight for 40$ not the highest quality tool but really did the trick for removing my old prop shaft bushings. It took 5-6 licks (its a slide hammer type tool) and they were out ,no epic struggle I've heard other people describe!I then froze the xpc bushings from skidim and put a little dish soap on them and they slid right in. My 89 prostar 190 with 1150 hrs ran smooth as silk till a couple weekends ago when I cliped a stump while idling in a canal looking at a house for sale,now i have a little vibration above 4000 rpm .I wanted a new 4 blade prop anyway.
