Speaker replacement in tower can?
Can you replace just the speaker in the tower can? One of the JL speakers has a dry rotted cone... I don’t want to put different cans on, just want to replace the speaker. I’m not an audiophile, so same speaker or similar would be fine.
Thanks! |

Yes you can replace just the speaker. You need to order speakers made for cans though. JL has a few models.

Great, thank you! Follow up question, can you put other can speakers in the stock cans, or do they have to be JL?

I guess they could be any brand as long as the speaker mounting holes align. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Kortney:
I have the same problem. I can't locate the thread, but someone has explained this on Team Talk with part numbers and links to products. There is not an easy solution that I know of. JL Audio uses a 7.7" driver which is unique to JL. Our boats have a component set, which JL no longer produces. You might get lucky and find a discontinued 7.7" marine component set on clearance somewhere. Otherwise the "right answer" is a new set of JL Audio coaxial speakers starting around $300/pair. A cheaper solution would be a smaller, less expensive speaker and build a bracket/adapter. Somehow mine still sound pretty good despite the dry rot, so I've put this off for a while... Good luck! |

If you guys are really trying to save what about getting the speaker reckoned. They sell recon kits online.

I had the same issue and was able to find the component style tower speakers at creative audio.

There is no reason that you couldn’t install a coaxial speaker in the main can and leave the tweeter in the pod disconnected. The sound would be good and if you matched the grills, nobody would ever know.

Do you know the speaker models? If you don't know the speaker model number it's likely labeled on the side of the speaker. To remove the speaker just apply even pull pressure to remove the speakers, and the speaker should pop out with hand pressure. If the speaker still fights you, try this nifty trick where you can use the speakers screws to press/push the speaker out of the tower can.
**Before you start disconnecting wires turn the master power switch off, and take a few pics of the connections so you can have reference pics. If you plan on attempting to do it yourself and have OEM JLs, the JLs have connection clues as to what each connection is for so label each wire when you disconnect. You got this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61q_6E3PVrY Given the age of your boat you likely have the JL Audio 7.7 (MCS-7CST5-4-W-RL) speakers, which have cross over part numbers to JL Audio M3s and M6s with or without LED options. Also, as a footnote, most audio dealers are out of JL Audio stock (alteast in TX), and it will most likely be weeks to months before online retailers or dealers start receiving new stock so you have options if you go with JLs again. Thanks everyone, I have no problem with JL, just wasn’t sure how it all works. Will look into this winter. Might give me a reason to make a trip to visit the boat, ha!
