Checking V-drive Fluid Level
I found the directions for checking the fluid level in transmission (see below). Step 2 says to quickly re-insert it fully, does this mean screw back down, or just put into hole and push down till the threads meet???
Step 1: After operating the engine at idle while inthe water for at least five minutes or until warm, turn the engine OFF and disconnect the enginesafety starting switch. Be sure the throttle/shiftcontrol lever is in neutral. Open the engine com-partment and locate the transmission dipstick. Note: The transmission fluid level must bechecked immediately after the engine shut-down to prevent an incorrect reading. Fluid drains back into the transmission from the cooler and cooler lines, and thedipstick could give a false reading if not done quickly. Step 2: Remove the dipstick and wipe it off with a clean rag. Quickly re-insert it fully and immediately remove. Check that the levelis at the FULL WARM mark on the stick. Step 3: Add or remove fluid as necessary to maintain the level at the mark. It is as important to avoid overfilling the transmissionfluid as it is to avoid underfilling. Use only the recommended automotive-type transmission fluid. Check with your MasterCraftdealer for the specifications. Never mix different types or brands of fluid! The manufacturer specifies Dexron-III fluid in thedirect drive 1:1 transmission and 15W40 motor oil in the V-drives and gear-reduction transmissions.

I have always took that to mean that it needs to be screwed back down.

I've been confused by the same thing. I measure without screwing it in, but am unsure if that's the correct answer.
EngineNut, we need you!

ditto, no screwing, but make sure it is straight up/down and ready to screw in. Right or wrong no issues so far.

They stress to not over or under fill transmission, but don't say how to quickly get an accurate reading. Great, I guess somewhere in the middle then

You aren't supposed to screw it back down to check the fluid level. I forgot where I read that, but I'll try to find it

Yep, I was wrong. I looked in my Zurth manual and it says the same as JRW160's. Don't screw in the dipstick to check fluid level.
